With regard to the on-field referees and the chain gangs...is it crucial? No. Does it sell the game as more "authentic"? Yes. Its the same argument that Franchise Mode-only guys make regarding SB and playoff "atmosphere and presentation" - 20 seconds after its over, they are on to worrying about other things, but everytime its mentioned you get a ton of replies...

I find it a bit jarring to see the animation in NCAA and Madden 2009 where a DB will pick up an incompletion and start trying to return it like a fumble and THEN the animation continues to simulate that player lookingback at....what exacty? In real life he would be looking back for the referee...but in these games the whole thing is a kind of perverse joke since there is NO referee to look for in the first place!!

Refs on the field and chain gang aren't needed to play the game, but they really add to the atmosphere and pull the user a little further into the game and onto the field.

I liken the refs and chain gang to the beach balls and fans reaching for foul balls in The Show. Sure if they weren't there, I'd be able to enjoy the game, but since they are there, I feel myself pulled in a little more to the game.


And besides, there's nothing better than running to the sideline and watching the poor old chain gang scurry out of the way.
