What you also have to understand is that NextGen is still relatively new. Typically, they only build a completely new engine every couple of years and then just tweak on the in-between years. the reasoning for this is that they cannot write and test an entirely new game engine in one year.

the "gimmicks" do a couple of things. they add fresh content to the game for marketing purposes, and they kepp the "masses" happy. would the hard core guys, the guys that have played year round for years on end, rather have more meat and less garnish? absolutely. but that wont put enough on the bottom line to keep the resources on the Madden team. so we kind of need the "gimmicks" and guys who only play til the next big game comes out to keep it all going for the rest of us.

As someone who has played all 20 years of the series, I think that EA has done a remarkable job of keeping the game alive and settign the bar for sports titles.
