I vaguely remember that now. You had to swing the stick up with the kicker's leg. I didn't play APF much but I do remember shanking all of my kicks.

Just make the controls ultra sensitive.

5 degrees off centre and you shank the kick.

While i'm at it. How bout a snap, hold and kick meter.
So Long snapping and holding actually matter.

A lot of the RL long snappers aren't even in the game.

ok i posted this in another kicking post but i will post it again.

field goal kicking. when the ball is hiked a football shows up like shown below it will show up in in the bottom right of the tv screen. now with the left analog stick you have full controll of a little red cursor/target that will show up on the ball in red or whatever color. you move the meter where you want the kickers foot to strike the ball. i think the better the kickers accuracy the larger the sweetspot/target is on the ball and the worst the kickers accuracy the smaller. ir this can be vice versa. and the animation for the kickers foot will start to move you try to move the right stick to mimic the players kick the closer you move the right stick with the players foot the more the power. and obviosly the stronger the kickers leg the more distance you get.
this meter will be awesome because if its wind in your direction adn you want to put a little bit of top spin on the ball you can by moving it slightly up it allows more strategy to the kicking game. this system is the same for kickoffs.

punting: the same meter shows up and the same conditons as the kickers (better the accuracy the larger or smaller the meter. the more stronger the kickers leg the farther the ball travels) however top spin and back spin replace each other becasue when punting the more you move your foot to the top of the ball the more backspin you get and chance of a good bounce near the endzone. the more to the back of the ball the more top spin/distance and forward roll you get. and you cna put back side spin on the ball or whatever area on the ball to try and get that kind of bounce when and if the ball hits the ground you have more controll over the placement.

this system would work great because if you want to do a squib kick on the kickoff you use the meter and put it close to the top of the ball and move the right stick slower to add lesser power. and same for onside kicks you have controll over the bounce or at least you can try.
the diagram below shows you how it would look. (not crappy like that LOL)

Nice ideas, like a mini-game each time for the kicks.

Would make it more exciting because right now, kicking field goals is so uninspiring and dull.
