Ian, can I have my half a yard back?
I don't know if I'm the only one that had this problem or not, but on Madden 09 it seems as if fractional yards are permanently rounded down to the nearest yard and the fraction doesn't carry over to the next play. This creates some statistical inaccuracies. It's not a huge deal or anything, but it is very possible to rush 3 times for a first down and get credited with only 9 yards rushing. This makes an impact on ypc for running backs especially over the course of the season. I'm a franchise player and a bit of a stat monger, so I'm hoping this can get corrected.
Ian, I hope you guys make the game you are envisioning, because I can tell it would be a great one by how the improvements that have been announced already could open up the floodgates as far as realistic interactions within the game. The procedural awareness thing should be a great addition, especially if you guys do what I'm hoping and split everything up into different types of awareness. You started it already with ratings like ball carrier vision, now just take it a little farther.
Two things that are big for me, and I have a feeling I'll have to wait a while to hear about this.
1. Defensive and offensive lines need to have more of a push rather than relying mostly on pancaking the opposing player. DEs need to fight around the edge of the tackle instinctively rather than having to press a button and use an over-animated move. Offensive linemen need to be able to push back the defense on running plays instead of merely holding or pancaking. It seems once two players lock up on next gen, they are stuck in an all or nothing battle. Neither one gives ground unless they are knocked over completely. This makes big DTs mostly useless, since they aren't generally going to knock over the O-linemen, and they can't collapse them into the pocket either.
2. The ratings really need to be dynamic for franchise. I like how in head coach players have a range that they fall in rather than one set rating. This shouldn't be scaled like this for everything, though. Strength should be static barring injury, as well as other physical traits like agility, speed, throwing power. But technique skills like catching ability, throwing accuracies, even tackling should all be scaled based on recent and past performance. How a player is playing inside an individual game, as well as how he's performing in the past season or so should affect his overall. Coaching (position coaches especially if we could get them in this year) should have some influence as well.
If you do make the game you are hoping for, I am sure it will be a great improvement. Don't settle for less.
