More specific ratings, couldn't you "retool" Awareness to be more like a general intelligence/learning/reaction rating?

Because isn't there really two kinds of "awareness"es? What you know from experience and learning, and your intrinsic ability to make intelligent decisions, etc;?

EDIT: I know awareness hasn't been totally phased out yet, but for the future.

awareness is a reaction time rating fight now.

every position has other ratings governing them.

There should be some sort of procedural awareness/situational awareness.
These would have an effect on certain times/situations in the game like 4th down, 3rd and long, clock management, turnover capitalization...etc. The list goes on.
