The defense hides its coverage but the wr in motion may end up getting passed off into a mismatch. That's the strategy part. If you see Randy Moss in motion you have to weigh risk/reward. The reward of man lock is you've hidden your man coverage but now Randy Moss has just been passed over to your number 3 db or an lb.
You my friend just put it WAAAAY better than I did. Well said, +10000 lol...

Has there ever been an explanation why so many things were taken out? It doesn't really make sense, I doubt there were bad intentions, maybe it was just too much to do.

This will always be a problem. If I am playing the Chargers for instance, the majority of the time a defenses lbs won't be able to handle Antonio Gates in man coverage. If my opponent goes to the line reading 3-4 man coverage right away, the defense is beat before the offense even snaps the ball. Forcing your opponent to take longer to read the coverage may be the extra second the defense needs to turn 6 points into a sack.

Would shading a WR help to replace man lock?

You can take your best CB and have them tail the man in motion.

This was in the PS/Xbox days and is making a return.

Yes.

Basically, every time they change generation they are making a new game. Basically, none of the code carries from what I have read.

So, basically they make a shell of a game the first year, and start adding features (new and old), fix problems, and tuning every year.

The article just talks about shadowing a certain wr, in other words assigning a db of your choice to defend the same wr all game no matter where they line up. It should help improve how effective man coverage is but will do nothing to disguise it.
