Flying to Philly: Reinstated QB Vick signs two-year deal with Eagles
NFL.com Wire Reports
Michael Vick has found his new NFL home in The City of Brotherly Love.
Vick's agent, Joel Segal, confirmed to NFL.com's Steve Wyche that the quarterback has signed a two-year contract with the
Philadelphia Eagles.
Vick, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the
Atlanta Falcons in 2001, once was the highest-paid player in football, but he hasn't played since 2006 when his career came tumbling down. He was convicted in August 2007 of conspiracy and running a dogfighting operation, sentenced to 23 months in federal prison, indefinitely suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and later released by the Falcons.
But after Vick served his time and was released from home confinement July 20, Goodell conditionally lifted the quarterback's suspension -- allowing him to sign with a team.
That team is the Eagles, who have
Donovan McNabb as their starting quarterback and
Kevin Kolb, a 2007 second-round draft pick, behind him.
Retired
Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, who's serving as Vick's mentor, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he believed the quarterback would sign with a team this week. However, Dungy acknowledged that Vick would work from a small list of teams because many wouldn't want to sign him and risk a potential backlash from fans.
"It's a complex issue," Dungy said. "You have to get past the possible reaction of fans, and it has to be a team that has an opening and has (salary) cap room."
Vick's new team will visit his former team on Dec. 6, when the Falcons host the Eagles at the Georgia Dome in Week 13.
