saving roster file

When I try to edit player attributes (helmet, etc) in Franchise mode, I am told I need to save the roster first. But, I have not figured out how to save the roster while in franchise mode. I have downloaded an updated roster file from the EA server, loaded and saved it from the main menu in offline mode. But, this does not seem to do the trick. What am I missing?

when you save your franchise that roster is saved in franchise mode

you can't take your edited roster out of franchise if thats what you're trying to do

I've saved the franchise several times. But, when I go in and try and edit the player attributes, I am told that I must save the roster before the changes will take effect.
