How do you defend passes over the middle?

I swear no matter what I do (highlight the slot WR, nickle or dime d), I seem to have problems with passes over the middle. Slant kill me even though I manually control a LB and use him in coverage.

Any tips on what defense or pre-snap adjustments I should be using?

There are a couple of things you can do...

#1. Cont. the LB and play that zone in the middle...

#2. Press in a Nickle or Dime and have an LB in a zone...

#3. In the options under DB adjustments, you can use the right stick and move zones to the center of the feild...

These can all work by themselves, BUT you can even use them all together if you want...

Cover 2 zone works as well.

There's a play in Nickel called 9 Velcro that covers the middle well. Only drawback is that you get practically no pass rush.

Maybe even keep your LB in a spy so they just stay directly in the middle. Something like Double QB Spy or just audibling your MLB to Spy.

Zone coverage to middle of the field. Its what I do if I'm expecting them to use a quick or slant over the middle.

A lot of things can help slow it down but you cant stop it no matter what you do.

Your best chance is manually yellow zone coverage...robber safety or hook zone LB.

Hope the turd that you are playing holds the ball or forces it.

Quick 3-4 yd darts over the middle are near automatic otherwise.

Re: How do you defend passes over the middle?

I was having trouble with that exact thing. I found a play that helped out of the Nickle with 3 D-lineman and 3 LB's. It could be the play that rangerrick is talking about, but I don't remember the name of it.

The corners are in man as well as one saftey, and there's one safety playing over the top and I usually control him to look out and give even extra help, and the two outside line backers are playing zone in the area where those slants would usually kill you.

Eventually if you can't get a pass rush it seems like those players are going to get open on slants or crossing routes. But I've found this to be pretty effective.

it's out of the 3-3-5 formation, i like that play and i will cover the rb so i don't get burned by the run.
