So, yeah, I guess it's that time of year, lol. This question gets asked at least once a year. I know that I've personally been trying to find the answer to this for at least three. I've PM'd developers, hit 'em up on twitter, searched the vast wasteland of the internet, and I still haven't gotten a definitive explanation yet.
Players seem totally convinced that this has an effect on the run game, yet, there was a chat session I remember in '10 or '11, where a developer said straight out that any slide protection ONLY works for the passing game. The only run plays it does have an effect on are draw plays.
I've seen mutliple madden strategy sites suggest it when running ball, then there was this one strategy site that conducted an experiment of run plays with slide protection and without. They ran something like a couple hundred plays and cataloged zero difference.
So, going off the premise that it's just for the passing game, then what's the proper situation to deloy it in? When I go to practice mode and hit aggressive, I don't see the o-line move any differently. I've heard it's meant to hold blocks longer. I've heard people suggest its use to protect the edges in passing situations. I know that last gen "slide protect up" was called, "spread", and did just that; spread your o-line out. I'd like to think it's the same here, but then why would it be called aggressive?
So, I'm like this at the whole thing
...
... but offline, I do use it in passing situations where I know only 4 are coming. Would be nice for an EA developer to let the cat out of the bag on this one once and for all on just what it was designed for.
