Is auto subs actually working, for all player positions, in CCM after the patch?

I'm playing with the default settings for autosubs. After a long drive, several of my players turn dark red. Maybe I misunderstand how it is supposed to work, but isn't the point that they should be automatically substituted?! Are there any reasonable reason why the game are not substituting these players?
