Presentation Needs to Tell the Story of the Game

The presentation in Madden has stepped up in the last two years. Despite the strides they've made in this department, I think many would agree that the presentation still doesn't do a fantastic job of telling the story of the game. While the presentation has several areas it could improve (camera work, instant replays, pre/post play, etc), I'm going to focus on the stat banners that need to be added or tweaked.

One of the first things we see when watching a CBS broadcast is the starting lineups, which Madden does support. However, CBS takes it a step further by providing a ranking of the offense/defense squaring off. This needs to be reflected in Madden -- they're critical to telling the 'story' of the game.

The below are taken from the Broncos vs Bengals matchup earlier in the season:

To be continued...

25 years down the road I would think we would be there by now.

Show some love to special teams! These stats matter:

Sorry for the above grainy pic; the take-away is that in critical situations, we should have some idea of what the kicker's range is. This is standard in TV broadcasts.

Some pre-snap stuff:

Dez stats from the last 5 games

Dez's stats in-game

This pic is significant b/c it highlights how defenders should be highlighted during a game. In Madden, you'll see a pop up in the score hub saying 'Sean Lee, 2 tackles'. You don't see those empty defender stats in an actual broadcast b/c that's not worth mentioning. When a defender makes an impact play or is being spotlighted for seasonal performance, he's recognized like Foote is above.

Below is just some next-level detail that I'd like to see Madden tap into. The presentation in Madden currently is too high level and basic.

The rest of these banners are odds & ends, but yet they're still cornerstones broadcast authenticity.

^^Not every player who has a role on Sunday is a starter. I noticed that when a non-starter made a play, CBS made sure to give you a look-see into who that player is.

Re: Presentation Needs to Tell the Story of the Game

Great thread man and I agree with everything you have posted. The thing I think has to be mentioned because it goes hand and hand with "telling the story" is game pace. These stat banners work so well on tv because there is no way to rush the broadcast. Imagine watching a prerecorded game and fast forwarding to the plays, those stat banners wouldn't even be noticeable. Likewise Madden needs to get rid of that rushed approach to gameplay, in order for presentation to shine, including commentary.
