Technically Speaking, the run & shoot is a spread offense.

The Shoot is a vertical offense out of spread formations, not a spread offense. Big difference

Try setting it at a 20-80 ratio, maybe the slider is poorly set up and seems backwards.

I play Coach Mode, fingers are getting too olde for regular, and I find AWR to be one of the key stats that I upgrade, always. I have been playing this game for 25 years now and have found AWR to be the thing that I always look at.
