What are the best type of plays to stop the run?

I'm not great at stopping the run so I need some help. Also, what plays are best to stop the read option?

Safety blitz. Heavy blitzes can crash the line and blow up the backfield. If everyone gets blocked, however, u can give up a big run. In general, bringing your safety up into the rush defense helps a lot, but risks a pass going deep.

Read option? Man up, and audible to 'show blitz' this puts everyone on the line and should provide better run support in general.

I like zone blitzes because most of your players stay in their zones to prevent the cut backs. I try to avoid man to man defenses against the read option teams. It's also a good idea to show blitz.

Also, you need to stay disciplined with the player your controlling and maintain gap coverage. Trust your teammates too. You don't have to make every tackle.

Against humans IMO the key is setting the edge yourself with a linebacker. Most big gainers that I see are when the guy makes it to the sideline, jukes a few guys and its off to the races. If you force him back towards the pursuit usually he'll get hung up on a blocker or taken down.

Against the read-option don't underestimate the value of defenders with high pursuit ratings.
