Braves Get Swept by Red Hot Cincinnati Team

July 22-24, 2024

The Braves stayed at home to take on a super hot Cincinnati Reds team, and the young team did not disappoint in this series.

The opener of this series was the game of the year, unless you were a pitcher. The Reds got off a good start off of Bryce Elder, as a Will Benson triple knocked in two runs before he was knocked in be Elly De La Cruz to score runs in the top of first inning. The Braves, like they did against the Cardinals in that opener, made their presence known, as Michael Harris, Ronald Acuna, and Austin Riley took three of the first five pitches from Nick Lodolo for homers. A Matt Olson double would lead to him getting knocked in by Sean Murphy for a 4-3 lead through one. In the third, a Riley error allowed an inning to continue that would lead to four Reds runs, most of the damage from a Jeimer Candaleraio three-run homer. Now down 7-4, Atlanta scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an Adam Duvall, Acuna (two runs), and Riley homers again. Candelario would strike again with a solo shot off of Aaron Bummer in the fifth to tie at 8-8 before De La Cruz added another run with an RBI single in the sixth. Down 9-8, Orlando Arcia hit mammoth two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. Jonathan India would tie the game with an RBI single to score Tyler Stephenson off of Tyler Matzek. The game would go into extra innings, where a TJ Friedl single with two outs would give the Reds a lead. The Braves offense died in the bottom of the 10th, as Arcia, Harris, and Acuna all went down as the Reds take a 11-10 win in the opener for their 11th straight win. The offense was phenomenal, but the pitching staff, which has struggled since the break, just had no answers in this one for the scorching hot Reds offense.

All of the offense from the opener went down the drain in the second game, as Spencer Strider and Andrew Abbott did their fellow pitchers a favor with dominant efforts. Unfortunately for the Braves, it was Abbott who came out on top, as the lefty threw a complete game shutout. Strider went seven innings, as the lone run of the game was a De La Cruz homer off of him in the sixth inning. The Braves post-Break struggles continue as the Reds get up to a 12-game win streak.

The sweep was complete with a 6-2 win for the Reds in the finale. Max Fried again struggled, giving up four runs in five innings. Reynaldo Lopez and Bummer gave up runs as well, Frankie Montas gave up two runs in seven innings for the Reds. Jarred Kelenic and Riley contributed the RBI as the offense struggled.

For the first time all year, the Braves are really struggling as they have lost five of their last six with all the games being at home. Still standing at an incredible 73-29, Atlanta now heads on the road to take on the New York Mets (48-55). Atlanta is barely hanging on to the top seed in the NL over the Dodgers (72-31).

Blue Jays lose their first series of the season

The Toronto Blue Jays (9-4) winning streak ended at 6 after dropping the last 2 games of a 3 games series against the Mariners for their first series at home this season.

The Blue Jays picked off right where they left off after the series in the Bronx. The offense was red hot and the pitching shutdowned the Mariners offense, powering Toronto to a blowout win in their home opener : 15-0. Kevin Gausman earned his 3rd win in 3 starts.

But things quiclky turned around in the second game. José Berrios (6.0 IP, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 SO) tried his best to keep Toronto close to Seattle but the offense was cold all night as they recorded only 4 hits and dropped the game 5-3.

On Wednesday, the pitching staff struggled : Chris Bassitt allowed 4 runs in 3.2 innings of work while Mitch White and Jordan Romano combined to give up 4 more runs. Despite that, the Blue Jays came close to win but fell short in the 9th inning as Seattle won the game by 1 run, 8-7.

The Blue Jays, who lead the AL East by 1.5 games over Boston, will have a day off before a 3 games series against the Rockies (5-8) at home.

Around the league
  • Cavan Biggio has been put in the 10-Days IL with a broken leg. He's expected to miss 1-2 months. The Blue Jay have called up Joey Votto. The 40 year started the season in Triple A.

Atlanta Gets Right Against Rival Mets

July 26-28, 2024

Coming off of being swept for the first time all season, the Atlanta Braves wanted to get things back going and were able to do so in a road series with the New York Mets. They didn't start off right in game one however, as Chris Sale really struggled against the New York lineup. The lefty threw 3.1 innings and gave up five runs, while Pierce Johnson gave up two and Dylan Lee gave up one. Ozzie Albies produced a homer and three RBI, while Adam Duvall also went deep, as the Braves scored five runs from the seventh inning on, but it wasn't enough.

The Braves found themselves in dire straits again in game two, as they found themselves down 3-2 in the top of the eighth, but Ronald Acuna decided enough was enough as he drilled a two-run shot to take a 4-3 lead. A few pitches later, Matt Olson would also deposit one in the bleachers before Raisel Iglesias closed it down in a 5-3 win to end the Braves losing streak. Charlie Morton went 5.2 innings with two allowed, while the bullpen largely held it down the rest of the way.

The third saw another comeback victory for the Braves, as Bryce Elder gave up three runs in the fifth inning and four total through five, leaving the Braves down 4-2 in the top of the seventh. Austin Riley would hit a two-run shot to tie the game, while Travis d'Arnaud got an RBI single in the eighth to set up Iglesias for another save in a 5-4 win.

The last game of the series didn't show a lot of offense, as a Riley homer in the first inning and a two-run shot from Ozuna in the seventh provided all the scored, as while David Peterson was solid, Spencer Strider was sensational. Strider took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, completing 6.1 before being pulled, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out seven and keeping the Mets off the scoreboard. Iglesias would pick up his third straight save, completing a series win for Atlanta.

Atlanta is now at 76-30 and hopefully over their mini slump after the break. Up next is a three game set with the 47-59 Milwaukee Brewers to close out the month of July. The Braves are looking to potentially move for a reliever.

ALCS Results against Tampa Bay

Game 1: Tampa Bay 3, Toronto 0
The Jays got solid pitching from Gausman in the opener, but couldn't get any offense going and dropped game 1 by a score of 3-0.

Game 2: Toronto 11, Tampa Bay 0
This time, it was Tampa's turn to get shut out and Toronto's offense provided Chris Bassitt with plenty of offensive support to even up the series.

Game 3: Toronto 4, Tampa Bay 3
Both offenses came out swinging to start the game, but then cooled off over the final eight innings, and when all was said and done, Toronto had a one run victory. Nate Pearson, who had been added to the roster due to an injury to Trevor Richards in the previous game, allowed only one hit in two and a third innings of relief to grab the win.

Game 4: Toronto 8, Tampa Bay 4
The bright lights of the postseason didn't have an effect on Paul Skenes at all as he fell one out short of a complete game. He did, however, strike out 13 Rays hitters and allowed just two runs on two hits.

Game 5: Tampa Bay 7, Toronto 2
This was was close going into the bottom of the seventh before Tampa busted the game open with a four run seventh, including a three run shot by Issac Paredes.

Game 6: Toronto 6, Tampa Bay 2

Kevin Gausman pitched his best game of the postseason by far, allowing just one run on two hits over seven innings. Yimi Garcia ran into some trouble in the eighth and was relieved with two outs and two on. Jordan Romano retired the last four Tampa hitters to pick up his fifth save of the playoffs.

So, Toronto wins the ALCS in six and will face the Dodgers in the World Series. LA has had quite the postseason so far, needing all five games to get past Philadelphia and all seven to get by Atlanta.

2024 IBL ALL-STAR GAME

AllStar_24
Fresno's Percy Sievers was the MVP with a triple, a home run, and this diving grab in center.

Arlington, TX (AP) – The 2024 IBL All-Star Game was a good one with the Desert League winning 3-1 at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Percy Sievers of Fresno was the MVP with a triple, home run and amazing diving catch in centerfield as he led the Desert League to the victory, their third straight All-Star Game win.

Sievers got things going for the Desert League with a solo home run to left to lead off the bottom of the third inning off of El Paso's Bruno de la Cruz.

The Mountain League would tie it up in the top of the sixth as El Paso's Shuheii Takahashi lined a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Blake Pacinelli to tie the game at 1-1. Roswell's Pacinelli had doubled to lead off the sixth.

The Desert League would regain the lead in the bottom half of the sixth against San Antonio's Ted McClendon. Mark Griffin singled to right and John Nichols doubled to right, his second double of the game. Lee Lim would hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Griffin and Frank Green followed with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Nichols.

The Mountain League could not push across another run and the Desert League held on for their third straight All-Star Game win.

Humberto Perez of Surprise was credited with the win, pitching one inning and allowing two hits and one run. Ted McClendon was given the loss, pitching the sixth and allowing two run son two hits. Fred Michael of Goodyear got the save and he worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Rollie Flingers of Rio Rancho got the start for the Mountain League, pitching two innings and allowing one hit. He struck out two and walked one. Alex Farmer of Flagstaff pitched the fourth inning and did not allow a baserunner. He had one strikeout.

The second half of the 2024 season kicks off on Thursday evening with a stand alone game featuring Colorado Springs at Prescott. The trade deadline is just two weeks away. It will be exciting to see what the contenders do as the deadline draws near.

Trades: Amarillo has sent 33-year-old LF Bobby Huff (75 OVR, C POT) to El Paso in exchange for 25-year-old starting pitcher Justin O'Neill (70 OVR, C POT). Huff will likely be an extra bat for El Paso down the stretch while O'Neil, a minor leaguer, could potentially be an arm down the road for Amarillo as they look towards the future.

Cubs Spoil Rangers Party With Sweep
Game 1: 4-2 Dansby goes deep
Game 2: 5-2 Suzuki 2 homeruns to win it
Game 3: 11-1 Morel hits for the cycle

Justin Steele opened the season for Chicago against Nathan Eovaldi and The World Series Champion Texas Rangers. Jitters were obvious when Nico Hoerner flung his bat into the dugout on his 1st swing of the new season. The Rangers also showed they came to play with 11 hits. The 1st being by Evan Carter who saw 1 pitch and singled to right. Then on the next pitch stole 2nd. Justin Steele showed he was frazzled as he took a pitch clock violation against Wyatt Langford who smashed a screamer right at Dansby Swanson who caught it, right place, right time to catch and step on 2nd all in one motion to get the self made double play and rescue Steele, who struck out Semien to get out of the inning the next at bat.
The Cubs were extremely patient as they took the lead without a hit walking the bases loaded and scoring on a fielders choice RBI for Nick Madrigal. Bellinger helped add to the lead in the 3rd with a sac fly to move Michael Busch to 3rd and Morel hit a single to score him the next at bat.
Texas wouldn't go quietly however as Seager and Adolis hit back to back doubles in a 2 out rally along with an RBI single by Josh Jung to tie it. Wyatt Langford got his 1st hit. A single in the 5th but Texas couldn't score him.
Chicago was able to take the lead back and seal it with a homerun by Swanson (1) to take the lead in the 8th and Michael Busch sealed it in the top of the 9th with a solo shot to right (1). Alzolay closed it out with 1 hit and 3 strikeouts to take the save and a Cubs win 4-2.
