30 Team Control Off-Season Contracts

So I'm in the off-season after the 2014 season in my franchise. I'm using 30 team control, and I'm currently going through teams to make contract offers and I could use some advice (and I figure others might have similar questions when they get to this point in their franchises).

I'm looking around and contract demands seem really low. For instance, Will Middlebrooks hit .253 with 27 HRs and 82 RBI in his age 25 season. He is arbitration eligible, but his contract demand is very low. He's only looking for $659K for 4-6 years. Because of this, I'm just going to offer him a more realistic contract.. only I'm not exactly sure what realistic is for him. I was originally thinking around $8M per year, but that might be a little on the low side.

I know whatever contract I offer to players like this will be accepted immediately, so I want to be sure I'm making good offers. I really don't want to leave these up to the CPU because good players will be signed for very cheap.

There should be a thread that simulate contract negotiations similar to how the arbitration thread worked last year with trades. Just i thought. Would help settle situations like this.

I would say keep in mind how other players contracts look, since the contracts are not true to life. So just maintain a balance

I thought about that, too. You would need a lot of info to play out the negotiations though.

Yeah I have to keep that in mind. I thought it might've been related to budgets, but those look pretty good, maybe even a little high right now.

Another example:

Eric Hosmer hit .291 27 HR 99 RBI and is 25 years old. He only wants $5.3M per year. Numbers like that would likely demand a contract close to $100M for someone who is only 25 years old, I would think.

I guess my biggest question is when to offer young players big contracts. Guys whose contracts are renewable for CPU teams, should I go ahead and offer them contracts that fit their performance (i.e. Jose Fernandez and Christian Yelich in Miami) or just renew their contract for another year?

Arbitration eligible players are tough as well. Most of their contracts demands are pretty low, so I can offer them $3-5M per year and they'll likely accept, or I can offer arbitration and increase their salary in relation to their performance for 1 year.

Any advice is appreciated. I'm not a big follower of MLB contracts and negotiations, so I'm not sure how these are handled in real life.

Well, MLB teams have 6 years of control on their players till the player is eligible to hit free agency. The first couple years the team can pretty much give a player whatever the team wants (like how the Angels did to Mike Trout). After a certain number of years the player is eligible for arbitration, & after the 6th year of service time they can become free agents & test their worth on the market.

So for Jose Fernandez, I would say the Marlins will look to lock him up with a big time contract extension soon but they'll keep renewing Yelich until he's eligible for arbitration, where if he's been consistent over the years, an extension would be likely before he hits free agency.

Cool, thanks. A lot of teams have been locking up young players through their arbitration years lately. It looks like every long contract will be accepted in the game, so now it's just figuring out what the player's value is.

Fernandez for instance.. would he call for a $100M contract after 2 dominating seasons and only being 21?
