I wouldn’t mind taking a decent utility player or low end bullpen arm.
On the spread sheet he has 11.8M in value. Some where that could be a fit and the deal would work value wise bang on I believe is to the Baltimore Orioles for Jonathon Villar. You would get a good utility guy. They get a good young player with years of control during a rebuild.

Re: Official MLB 19 the Show Trade Discussion

I was wondering what people thought of Tepera to the cubs for Schwarber?

I know Schwarber is like 11.2M but there is no way the Cubbies give him up for that I calculated Tepera at 22M Im not the greatest at calculating ARB players so this could be off but it should be slightly above or below that.

Lastly would this this deal work straight up or do you think there should be a piece going one way or the other alongside the centerpieces?

Thanks in advance all. Happy this thread is back!

Schwarber is an interesting guy because his surplus value doesn't really fairly represent his potential. Guesstimating, I'd put his value around 25M right now. I haven't calculated Tepera yet but I'm guessing Tepera and a lottery player might do the trick.

For everyone else, it's my birthday today so I'll be engaging in family activities throughout the day but I'll try to pick back up on the Log tonight so we can get that thing wrapped up. I'm expecting trade inquiries to start flooding the thread after the OSFM (or whatever it will be called) roster drops in the coming days.

Happy birthday!

Schwarber is actually a prime example of the flaws in the surplus value system. Schwarber is very valuable to an AL team, but not so much to an NL team, although his defense has stepped up a bit in the last few years. Surplus value is, however, the closest thing to a perfect tool we have for assessing player value and fairness.

Using my calculator, Schwarber is a $54million player. about the equivalent to a 55FV prospect. and also Happy Birthday!

I guess it really depends on where you value Schwarber. As a bat first player, he's really good, and the potential is certainly there. The problem with it though, is that he's been used in a platoon fairly regularly (Reason #1 why his value isn't as high as most would expect).

Defensively though, we can say all of the "best shape of his life", and "he really improved defensively!"'s that we want, but the truth is that he's been a negatively rated defender since day one.

Steamer projects him as a 2 WAR player annually over the next 3 years. There's certainly value there. Given his defensive issues, does that make him a Corey Dickerson type? I certainly see reason to say he's worth more (plus he's got an extra year of control than Dickerson had), and the Tampa situation was certainly different given their budget, but the return for Dickerson was virtually non-existent. I'm not saying that you're not getting back/giving up a good prospect for Schwarber, I'm just saying that it's not going to be what it was when he broke into the league.

I think we can probably also look around the league to contracts given to similar bat-first type players right now. There isn't a huge market.

End of the day, I could certainly see getting a top 100 prospect + good reliever, but I think the idea that you could get a 55 FV prospect (top 30 or so), isn't realistic. If you were Tampa (they could use him), would you give up Brett Honeywell? Probably not.

I do think we need a better system for value as well. I know we multiply 9 for every player. But when CJ Cron who was DFA in the off-season is worth 70 million and Buxton is worth 112 million. We get a lot of overvalued surplus.

Maybe multiply

9 for stars
8 for all stars
7 for starters
6 for bench
5 for DFA players

I love the formulas put out but it needs a little tweaking. A lot of players values match up and then you have platoon players coming in at 70 million

Check out my trade value calculator earlier in the thread. It takes player role into account. I personally believe it’s the most accurate method.
