NBA 2K16 Teach Me How/Strategy Thread

This has become a staple at OS over the last year, so most of you know how to use it.

If you have questions, if you are in need of some strategy help (online or off), if you don't know how to do certain moves, or if you just want some general help then this is for you.

I'd also like to link some helpful threads here as they go. The first being itchyroll_51 (known as the uberhelpful SamPham) tutorial thread, where he is taking tutorial requests!

How do I generally play the game? What are some general tips and tricks. I have been away from the game for so long.

Spot reserved for "How to Substitution"...

We will use two buttons to do manual substitutions on the fly:
(A) Right analog stick
(B) R1 (or L1)

Press down on the D-pad brings up the 1st substitution screen (current lineup on the floor). The player to be substituted out will have his name up top on the 2nd substitution screen (available bench warmers or substitutes).

GOAL: First substitution picture below. We will substitute Curry. Push up on the right analog stick will select Curry to be substituted out ("UP" corresponds to Curry; if wanting to sub out Klay Thompson, push "DOWN" on the right analog stick; if wanting to sub out H.Barnes, push "LEFT" on the right analog stick; if wanting to sub D.Green, push "RIGHT" on the right analog stick; "CLICKING" the right analog stick (R3) will select Andrew Bogut to be substituted out).

This will automatically bring up a 2nd screen showing most of the available players you can replace Curry with. Press R1 or L1 to show the rest of the bench players you can replace Curry with. There is a maximum of two pages worth of available substitutes.

NOTE: Unfortunately, nothing will highlight. Curry's name will not change color. The only way to tell who is getting subbed out will be seeing the player's name positioned at the top in the 2nd screen ("Toggle Page" substitution screen)


Court (Players on the floor/court) vs. Toggle Page (available substitutes/bench warmers)
At the bottom of the substitution screen are the words "Court" and "Toggle Screen":
(A) "Court" is an indication that the existing substitution screen represents all 5 players currently on the basketball court.
(B) "Toggle Page" is an indication that the existing substitution screen represents the player that you would like to sub out and bench warmers that you would like to sub into the game. Hit R1 or L1 to bring up other available substitutes/bench warmers.

When playing post defense, hold the Right Stick towards the post player and your defender will "stay vertical" when defending the shot.

While posting up, Hold the Right Trigger/R2 and flick the stick in any direction to do a shimmy post fade/move.

The BEST tip that I can give and that was given on a different thread. Turn on playcall art for ALL plays. I've been really taking advantage of the freelance offense by knowing what plays are being called when I stand on a certain spots or use Smart Play.

Quick strategy question. Seems I have trouble when a user plays manual double team all games. Plays off ball defense and brings the best defensive wing he has to me to try and steal the ball on the pass or just create chaos to blow up my offense and get a turnover. So far tried spacing the floor. Sending the open man on cuts and running plays which seem to not have enough time to get set up. Any tips?

Typically, I dribble to the top of the three point line and patiently for the double team to come towards me. To me, I felt it was easier to hit the open man from that spot on the floor.

Also, be patient. The double team is only effective for people who like to use turbo all the time

Hey guys, I am new to NBA 2K16. First time playing NBA 2K. I had problem with shooting / dribbling / dunking. I tried to search for as much tutorial as I can but I can really understand. Sorry about my bad English.

When I was playing MYCAREER. There's SHOOTAROUND mode. I always score and I can always dunk in there. But when comes the real match. I kept missing and I can't dunk. Please advise me. Thanks

If you're talking about from a gameplay aspect, you'll need to known the properties of real basketball to be successful this year.

You have two options, you can use a Freelance Offense, no plays and CPU moves as wanted (this year they actually move and cut well)

or

You can run plays, simply by Hitting Up on the D-pad will call 2K smart play, which is the best way I have found to play. It'll give you directions on how to run the play and usually finds you success. Also be sure to play to YOUR tempo.

Pick and roll ball handler tips

Wait and make sure the screen is set AND see how to CPU is defending the pick and roll before you attack! Last year you could just attack this year the CPU AI defensive will eat you alive. Be patient!

When calling the screen make sure you let go L1 before you attack. If you try to sprint while holding L1 (hitting R2) the screener which switch sides while you are attacking causing spacing issues.

Getting past defenders
Seems like people are having trouble scoring/getting past defenders this is a quick little tip. Triple threat something we learned in 5th grade ha. With the new animations it's Highly effective this year

I might be missing something obvious, but is there any way to prevent your PG's from picking up their defender full court? I play as the Rockets, and I'm fine with Beverley doing it because that's his style, but I don't necessarily want Lawson doing it all the time. Is it because I have the defensive setting on the other PG to "smother"?

These types of threads is exactly the reason I stumbled onto OS back in 2008.
