how does playoff bracket get set up?

I'm playing my first season in like 3 months so I forgot how brackets were set up. I'm currently sitting 4th but I want to work it so I'm not in the same bracket side as the top guy. Our stats our very close. So I don't want to risk losing to him and not make it to the finals. If anyone can help by telling me or showing how where you finish in the season puts you on the bracket
