Improved Player Locomotion, Momentum, & Acceleration

The title says it all. This is my biggest gripe with the "next gen" NCAA games. Other than straight away speed, I feel almost no difference running with a small, agile running back than I do running with a 300 pound defensive tackle.

As it is right now, there's no penalty for a defender overrunning a play because they can run full speed in one direction, stop, make a 180 degree turn, and be back at full speed INSTANTLY. It makes running misdirection plays useless. If NCAA truly wants to take that next step in terms of gameplay, it has to create more realistic player movement for all 22 players on the field. That doesn't mean adding in some new animations for the ball carrier. They have to make momentum, agility, and acceleration just as important as speed, as they are in real life. If speed was the only important thing in football, teams would just recruit track runners. Until this aspect of the game is addressed, NCAA is always going to have an unrealistic, "arcade" feel. EA, you guys had player movement down pretty well on the PS2 ... bring it to the PS3.

What are your thoughts on Madden 10 in this aspect? They did add more momentum from the demo but I still don't have my copy yet. I want to see how it feels on Fast speed (same as NCAA 10) to see how the momentum feels.

Re: Improved Player Locomotion, Momentum, & Acceleration

This and running/throwing animations are my 2 biggest things I want addressed in NCAA 11. The slow gameplay of Madden has really improved the overall feel of the game... Yes it needs some tweaks, but its actually fun to run the football, play defense, and set up a passing game waiting for routes to develop. If NCAA just slows it down like M10, and then takes weight into effect & improves the running animations the gameplay will be 100X better.

To be honest, I haven't played Madden 10 yet. Not even the demo. However, I saw enough videos to know that Madden still has players that can turn on a dime at full speed without even slowing down. Slowing down the gameplay seems like a good idea and most people seem to agree that it helps the gameplay. While this may help, it's only a band aid on the problem ... not a solution. But at least it indicates that EA is aware of the problem and is looking for ways to make the gameplay and player movement feel more realistic. That's why I'm hopeful that this area of the game will be overhauled for NCAA/Madden 11.

Re: Improved Player Locomotion, Momentum, & Acceleration

The defenders should keep their eyes on the ball-carrier
and if i have a speedy back like noel devine, part of my run style is going to be making defenders overrun me when i cut, it's impossible to do that in this game, all the ea guys think is that we need more animations, but i could make a living running the ball with no animations, a cut system, and defenders that overrun me
and if you have two defenders about 5 yards apart from each other, do you realize that in this game is literally impossible to run between them, yea, it's because this game is so animation happy

reggie bush made a career in college of cuts, simple cuts, so in this game its impossible to create a reggie bush because you can't cut in and out

yea, but if they slow down the gameplay, then there will be no explosiveness out of explosive athletes, not that there's any explosiveness in this game anyway

ncaa needs a signature style system, so when i run with noel devine, i feel like it's noel devine and i should feel elusive and quick, and when i run with charles scott, i feel like im running with charles scott and can run through anyone, and not around anyone
and charles scott should have different animations than noel devine

There's a speed slider in madden that allows you to set how fast the fast players are compared to the slower ones. So I assume they could add this to NCAA.

YES! YES! YES! Along with throwing styles... High release, slow wind up, side arm, wrist flick, phillip rivers style, etc.
