Think of it like this, CNN can report about Bayer Aspirin and they are allowed to call it the official name. However if CNN decides to start selling aspirin in a bottle they can't call it Bayer Aspirin.

I know what you're saying about the fact EA should be able to use names but the reason they don't is for both EA's and NCAA's protection, if they did then inevitably someone in college football would sue for a right to the profits from the game. Such a suit against ESPN would not be possible though because it's news, not a product for sell at Walmart, Kmart, etc.

Name one merchandise product the ncaa licenses that allows players names to be used? There are none. EA made a marketing decision to make the players and rosters accurate and with the ability to edit them. The game would still sell regardless.

The NCAA making billions off of the unpaid players is another issue.

I'm going to lock this thread, based on the fact that the entire thought behind the origin of it is wrong. EA did not try to stop roster sharing. Microsoft did.
