Passing on the Wii

Has anyone mastered the art of passing to the right player on the Wii (with advanced controls)? I like the throwing motion with the Wii more than just pressing the buttons on the other systems, but too often throw to the wrong receiver. I'm not sure if my finger slides from the left side of the pad to the down position while in motion or if there's something else going on...
