There should have been a pass interference call on the defensive back, thus negating the interception and subsequent touchback/safety debate.

Also, there could have been a flag thrown for holding by the offensive guard, thus we would have had offsetting penalties and replayed the down.

Why aren't any of you seeing this?

Because the interception took place inside the five-yard line, the momentum rule is in effect. Really, the player never changed his direction to be moving toward the other goal line at any point. Hence, his initial momentum was still taking him toward his own goal line (not directly, mind you, but toward it nonetheless). Even if he managed to be running parallel to the goal line at that point, you'd have a hard time getting an official to be in just the right spot on such a play to determine that he had, indeed, reestablished his momentum toward the other goal line. Hence, you have a touchback.

I'm just trying to help out. I happen to be an official and have had to learn all this stuff. I also can't help but feel the need to speak up in such cases since I can't go into the stands (like I'd have liked to do tonight) and explain to the parents that the rules they think they know from watching TV on Sundays has little to no bearing on the actual rules as enforced in a high school game!

I'm not saying EA understood all this when they programmed this part of the game, but, technically, the correct ruling for this particular play was a touchback.
cool
