What's your ideal 70-man roster breakdown?

For spread offense and 4-3 defense, this is what I would ideally like to have in a given year.

QB, 4: 3 active + 1 redshirting
HB, 4: 3 active + 1 redshirting
FB, 2-3: 2 active + maybe 1 redshirting
WR, 7: 6 active + 1 redshirting
TE, 4: 3 active + 1 redshirting
T, 5: 4 active + 1 redshirting
G, 5: 4 active + 1 redshirting
C, 2-3: 2 active + maybe 1 redshirting
DE, 5: 4 active + 1 redshirting
DT, 5: 4 active + 1 redshirting
OLB, 5: 4 active + 1 redshirting
MLB, 3-4: 3 active + 1 maybe 1 redshirting
CB, 6: 5 active + 1 redshirting
FS, 3-4: 3 active + maybe 1 redshirting
SS, 3-4: 3 active + maybe 1 redshirting
K/P, 2-3: 2 active + maybe 1 redshirting
Extra: 13-19 (whatever extra good recruits come easiest)

That's a minimum of 41 active players and a minimum of 10 redshirts, plus 6 positions where I like to have a redshirt every other year or so. So I only need roughly 54 players for my ideal roster.

Should be easy enough with a 70 man roster maximum. Yet I can rarely get my roster set up this way. Way too many HBs/WRs/QBs in the game and not enough at other positions, especially offensive line.

Re: What's your ideal 70-man roster breakdown?

The way the game is currently there really isn't a lot that you can do. If we had formation subs then you could have more options to spread out your players and fully utilize the 70 man roster. I would love to be able to bring in my FR pass-rushing specialist in on 3rd downs in dime situations, or that scat back RB who is 3rd on the depth chart ro run read option plays in short yardage sitations while not having to pause the game and go to the depth chart for every move.

Which if I did would annoy people in an OD game.

Re: What's your ideal 70-man roster breakdown?

when I play with Texas Tech.

QB: 4 - usually recruit 1 QB a year, try to redshirt their 1st year
HB: 4 - usually will use 2 during normally rotation, 1 reshirting, the other for back-up incase of injury.
FB: 1 - wouldn't even bother having any, but you have to have at least 1 or you get stuck with a walk-on.
WR: 8 - 6 active, possible 2 more reshirting or riding the bench. they could get playing time, but the game decides to put in a DB instead of the 7th and 8th WR.
TE: 2 - with Texas Tech, I never use the goalline formation, so 3 TEs are useless to me.
T: 4 - for both T and G, I like to have 2 for right/left
G: 4
C: 3 - Center are sometimes hard to get good, so i get 3 and reshirt their first year in hope by the time they play they are good.

defense depend on what I'm using at the time, i normally use 4-2-5, but lately I've been using 3-4.

DE: 4 - 2 for each side
DT: 4
OLB: 6 - 3 for each side, one possibly reshirting.
MLB: 3 - sometimes like having 4(especially when I'm running the 3-4)
CB: 8
FS: 3
SS: 3
K/P: 2

thats 63, the final 7 are usually players I find could be good for special teams(I don't use starters for KR/PR), or possibly good in the long run. sometimes with TTU, I have 5 QBs, with 1 always redshirting.

Re: What's your ideal 70-man roster breakdown?

The lack of formation subs also ruin the utilizing some of my offense/defense niche guys.

Flexbone/WCO Offense

QB - 3, RB - 6, FB - 3, WR - 6, TE - 2, OT - 6, OG - 6, OC - 3

I rarely use TEs because I find that I can rarely if ever find recruits of that position interested my schools even when I'm a powerhouse unless they're 2-stars. I often use quicker offensive tackles in their place. Fullbacks are similar, but you can find those 3-stars or 2-stars with 4.5-4.6 speed and solid acceleration that can tote the rock although they are completely worthless in other attributes.

3-3-5 Defense

DE - 6, DT - 3, OLB - 6, MLB - 3, CB - 6, FS - 3, SS - 6

Proper defense was completely useless in NCAA 09, but the 3-3-5 was actually the least useless base playbook in the game. After studying it hard, I was getting decent pressure versus the great wall of o-linemen with blitzes and with the extra safety help, your opponent's ball carrier had a few more men to run with as he waltzed down the sideline to the end zone untouched.

Special Teams

P - 1, K - 1

Normally, the one kicker/punter that I target shuns me at the last second for a smaller school even though he has a greater interest in my school by a mile and scholarship in hand. Often times, I just use one guy to double as kicker and punter, while the other is simply a walk-on.

That's 70 if I counted right.

LOL. I try not to let it come down to that. I love to get a K/P a year early and redshirt him during my other guy's senior year if possible. If i'm lucky enough to have one interested a year early, I'd rather recruit him then than have to go after 3-4 guys the next year because I have to get one. Then again, my rival in OD didn't even bother recruiting a K when he needed one, and got a walk-on freshman rated 70. =\
