Those schools still get top recruits so they havent fallen of that much. Those schools suffered coaching changes that didnt workout.

Army and Navy used to be perennial national powers, until the end of the 1950's..and were still good up until the mid 70's or so.

Back then, they could recruit with anyone.

Of course, it was a different world. There wasnt the prospect of becoming wealthy for life, by playing professional football

You can go all the way back to the 19th century where Yale and Harvard and Princeton were the football powerhouses and now they aren't even like 1 star.

First school that I think of that went from the top to the bottom is Army. Notre Dame hasn't really fallen that far I don't think. It's still a big deal to play for Notre Dame, and I think that if you ask anyone they will say that Notre Dame is still has prestige. It definitely took a hit though.

I went 9-4 in the Big 10 and finished the season with a bowl berth, but loss while playing as ND in an OD. I lost a prestige star and I am now a 5*. Really? ND still snags 5* recruits and have a top class year in and year out. I finish the regular season 3 games over 500.00 and I still lost a prestige star?! Sounds like a step in the right direction to me.

The SMU death penalty affected more schools then just SMU. It was one of the factors that eventually led to the end of the SWC. The former SWC schools left out of the Big 12 (and SEC), all suffered a hit in prestige that they really have not come back from. Houston, Rice, (TCU untill recently).
