Defensive Playbook & Style

Im usually a base 4-3 guy, but with all of the spread offenses, Im thinking the 4-2-5 will offer more flexibility.

I'm not a real heavy blitzer..so I dont really like the 3-3-5 or 3-4 all that much.

I prefer having good speed rushers, and strong DT's as well as versatile zone/man CBs and safeties, and a good MLB.

I like the 4-2-5. It's easy to disguise looks, puts more speed on the field and still has 4 down linemen to help prevent against easy gains you would get from three down linemen.

I always go 4-3. Always have, always will. It's been working for me so far.

Re: Defensive Playbook & Style

I was thinking that I may, for the first time, try 3-4 or 3-3-5 this season. Not necessarily for the specific purpose of dealing with the spread. That's a good reason, but it's secondary.

What I've noticed is that the draw plays are far more effective this season--if the defense isn't blitzing. I don't know whether teams will really be trying to use a lot of the draw, which was generally ineffective in the past. But when you blitz, you seem to break up the effectiveness of the draw a little bit.

Additionally, if you're good at mixing up the blitzes, you can keep the QB confused with lots of good pressure. Get sacks early, force the QB to make quicker throws, which result in INTs.

I use the team's default playbooks.

I usually like a 4-3 or even 4-2-5, but I kinda liked playing with WVU's 3-3-5 and 3-4, so I might stick with that. Unsure, though; might go multiple D.

The 3-4 and 3-3-5 are great for blowing passes, but im just not confident that I can stop the run with those schemes, unless I see good Gap control and block shedding out of the players around me.

Otherwise, you really have to blitz virtually every down for the 3-4 to work..maybe not every down, but mroe then what I prefer.
