Redshirting Players

Is there a point in redshirting players in the game?
I understand that redshirting means that that year does not count toward their eligibility of 4 years. .. But dont student athletes only go to school for 4 years?

It may be a dumb question.. but I am from Canada so I am unfamiliar with all the intracancies of NCAA football.

Re: Redshirting Players

These days many students take 5+ years to get a degree, and the ones that do finish in 4yrs (or less) start working on their graduate degree while still under scholarship.

I know thats how it is in real life, I just mean in the game. Are the same players going to be around for 5+ years?

They could be, if you redshirt them. Not if they go to the NFL of course but otherwise they will play all of their years (5).

There are redshirt seniors on real college football teams. Sometimes these guys may be working on their masters degree. Sometimes they're still working on their bachelors.

Sometimes they have their bachelors and are "working toward their masters" which really just means they enrolled in ballroom dancing so they could still qualify as a student and came back to play his last year of eligibility.
