The way the game has been for at least the last several years is if the player does not record a tracked stat of some kind, then he will automatically be given a redshirt during the next offseason. If he is on the depth chart somewhere, he may very well end up on kickoff/punt coverage/return teams and end up getting a pancake or tackle which is why some of the guys responding are mistakenly believing that the CPU will not redshirt for you. For any of those guys that didn't get redshirted I can guarantee that if you scroll thru all the various stats you'll find something recorded for their freshman year.
