Re: How cool would it be if coordinators were in the game?
Coordinators could work very well, depending on the system they designed for them. I would like to see something where Coordinators have certain systems they run and have a game plan that follows them around (much like the game plans you can design in Madden 11). Each coordinator would only have one or two play books they could run. So if you like running a 3-3-5 defense, but you hire a D-Coordinator that can only run a 4-3 or 46 play book you have to run with what he has. Each Coordinator can also recruit certain types of players.
Say you have a D-Coordinator who runs a 4-3, and likes to run a Cover 2 system. Well he is going to recruit Pass Rushing Defensive Ends, Fast Zone Coverage Safeties, Zone Coverage Linebackers, and Athletic Corners.
Or you have a D-Coordinator who runs a heavy zone blitz 3-4. He is going to recruit Run Stopping DT/DE, and fast athletic linebackers who can cover zone, but also have good pass rushing attributes.
The same can be said for O-Coordinators. You have a guy who runs a West Coast or I-Form offense. He is going to want possession receivers, accurate QB, receiving RB/FB/TE. Or the Option O-Coordinator goes after the fast QBs and fast o-linemen.
Then on top of that each O-Coordinator could have a rating that directly ties to position development, and this could be simplified into letter grades like the pitch ratings. You can have a Coordinator who has these development ratings:
QB: B+
RB: A
WR: C+
TE: B
OL: D
Under that system, his QBs, RBs, and TEs would progress well and possibly meet their potential, whereas Wide Receivers will need a lot of work, and linemen are largely ignored. Of course you can still have players who don't respond to coaching, much like in real life, or who overcome bad coaching and still flourish in bad situations. This would also effect recruiting as you might be able to recruit more highly rated Running Backs because they will want to play for your coach as he has a reputation of developing top flight Running Backs.
This way, it would in a sense fix the recruiting problems we see the CPU always having. Teams like Floridas/Oregons/Michigan/Miss St. would actually recruit players that fit their offense, which is especially important at QB. But then you would actually have to game plan against certain teams. Like you know you are going up against Generic D-Coordinator 23 who runs a 4-3 base mainly running man coverages with a lot of blitzes coming from the OLB, or Generic O-Coordinator 15 who runs the Run N Shoot with strong armed QBs, so you know you can sit back in coverages and hope you can capitalize on mistakes by the QB.
I really want to be able to battle the CPU in a chess match and really see some strategy coming from the AI, even if it's mainly a human designing the game plans with predetermined plays. It would still be better than what we currently see with 4-3 Under Engage Eight, 4-3 Over 2 Man Under, 4-3 Under Engage Eight. Please oh please, can we please get a really in depth coaching carousel?
