Zone coverage

Maybe I don't know enough about X's and O's - but when do I use zone coverage? Every time I use it, I get burned BAD.

Re: Zone coverage

If you are getting burned bad are you getting beat deep? Dink and dunked all the way down the field?

But basically all the zone defenses have holes in them that can be exploited. Cover 2 the middle of the field, or if you flood one side of it can be picked apart. Cover 3 will give up short passes and side line passes as the outside corners have "deep 3rd" responsibilities. Can also get beat deep by sending two deep routs at the Free Saftey's 3rd. Like the 4 verticals play is a cover 3 killer (even in real life football) makes the safety decide who to cover and whoever he doesn't cover will have a free release down the field. Cover 4 is almost like a prevent defense gives up big chunks of yardage underneath and is terrible against the run since everybody is playing back. I would use this as a 3rd and very long like 15 yards or so.

Just look at down and distance and field location to know which ones to use in each situation.

Zone is best best used in basically every situation besides very short and very long situations. 3rd n long the best zone would be cover 6. Try mixing in some zone blitzes if you have good DEs.

Re: Zone coverage

Depends on how you use zone coverage. SFc pointed out some great things but I would also add that if you use the same zones too often you will get torched.

Zone is definitely situational. I prefer zone when I think PA is coming and zone blitzs are my run stoppers. Zone D may also be best when you have a good idea of what your opponent likes to run.
