How has Michigan not retired Charles Woodson's number!

I am a diehard USC fan and this baffles me still.

Any Mich fans know the reason?

Doesn't look like they retire numbers just for someone being a good player. http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-foot...061209aaa.html

Most of these guys did something significant outside of football.

Michigan doesn't retire numbers. They honor them. The player wearing that number now will have a patch on their jersey honoring the Michigan legend who originally wore that number

Yep exactly what he said, they do not retire numbers but honor the player who wore that number with a patch on the jersey.

Wow, much respect to Michigan for that actually (From an FSU fan) I wish more teams did it that way, soon we're going to be running out of numbers! lol

I never saw the point of retiring numbers. Does it really matter if the Eagles have another #5 or ther is another Packer with the #4?

Desmond Howard's #21 was the first number to get a patch. The biggest tradition at Michigan previously was the #1. There's a strong history of top wide recievers and it was very significant to be awarded that number. Braylon Edwards even started a scholarship fund of some sort going to whatever WR earned the #1. Rich Rod nearly ruined that whole thing (like everything else), but I believe it's still in tact.

A couple other schools have similar traditions. Most notable I think is the #44 at Syracuse before they finally retired it.

I don't like retiring numbers, I definitely think they should become traditions, numbers that are earned, not just given.

Re: How has Michigan not retired Charles Woodson's number!

Bobby Hauck at UNLV implemented a new tradition for the "Battle Born No. 36."

From their website: "No. 36 - complete with a patch of the state flag on the back - is worn by a Nevadan who best exemplifies the Battle Born spirit of his state, which was the 36th state to join the union, and the toughness and pride of Rebel Football."

It's a pretty cool idea and I remember having a lot of fun with it in a dynasty I did a couple years ago, where I would follow the same idea giving No. 36 to my best senior Nevadan (typically on defense).
