Re: Does Redshirting players hurt their progress in the long run?

Redshirting helps, but with my teams I don't redshirt anyone. If they can contribute, they play.

So basically I fill my depth chart up including FR where they are slotted in. If they don't play all season they automatically redshirt. If they are good enough to play and contribute they will see the field.

I do sometimes want to redshirt them to get that extra offseason of training, but once I have a team good enough and I can recruit well I let the FR play if they are good enough. Usually they will not see the field, but sometimes they step up big in games where there are injuries.

I try to redshirt OL and DL if at all possible, and usually QBs too. If someone is going to be a starter as a true freshman and the backup is more than a point or two behind I won't RS him generally. Also if a WR or RB is going to be my #2 (or possibly 3 for WR) and is substantially better than the next guy down I'll let him play.
