I hope they've fixed....

Here's a couple of things I hope they've fixed in 2005:

1)15 yard clipping replaced by 10 yard Illegal Block in the Back. Clipping is VERY rarely called anymore.

2)Facemask isn't a loss of down. In 2003 and 2004, if you gained 2 yards on 1st and 10 and got a 5 yard facemask penalty, it was 2nd and 3. It should be 1st and 3.

Actually, I believe a 5-yard facemask penalty is not an automatic first down, therefore it would be 2nd down and 3 in the scenario you describe. Only the 15-yard personal foul facemask penalty calls for an automatic first down. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the way it is.

Youre right. The 5 yard facemask is just "tacked on" to the end of the play. The 15 yard personal foul facemask would always result in 1st and 10.

Yep #2 is wrong, like everyne else said a 5 yard facemask isnt a automatic first down, only the 15 yarder.

Say you've got second and nine at your 30 and you gain two yards, but on the play there's a facemask penalty.

You should get the two yards to the 32, plus 5 yards for the penalty to the 37.

Shouldn't it now be SECOND and two?

On the game it would be third and two...

Nope, you and KP are both wrong, you don't get to play the down over again and get the penalty, it is just tacked on to whatever happened on the play.

Razorbacker understood what I was saying. It isn't an automatic first down, but you do get whatever down you just played over.
