Re: Tips to building a Triple Option Team

This is what I usually shoot for since I run a triple option & power run offense.

QB: Speed & Throw Power for all the play action bombs
RB: Speed & more speed
FB: Run Block & Speed (slow FB kills you on the dive)
WR: Speed & Run Block
TE: Run Block
OL: Run Block

I usually carry 4-5 RBs in case of injury and you'll use 3 in the Flexbone. QBs just go 3 deep for injury purposes. FBs are hard to recruit for me and end up switching TEs or power RBs when I'm short on them.

Offensive line needs to be faster. Center needs to be the best run blocker while the Tackles need to be faster. It'll help.

Re: Tips to building a Triple Option Team

It depends. Are you running a triple option out of flexbone/wingbone? Or out of shotgun more like an Oregon type offense?

If you're staying under center with a more power run triple option offense my #1 priority is finding a HB/FB with at least 80 strength and 80 trucking. These are your power backs in the recruiting section. I usually recruit power running backs here and either convert them to FB or just use formation subs. Getting your B back going is crucial for having success with the flexbone. After getting yourself a good B back you need a quarterback with some speed. Unlike the poster above me I prefer a guy with high accuracy over high throw power. I throw the ball 7-8 times game when things are going right, so I'd rather have him hit dead on all 8 passes. Plus I rarely throw the ball over 20 yards anyway. For your receivers look for guys that are 6'3+ with good strength and run blocking. You need these guys to seal the edge on pitch plays to the outside. Often I'll recruit blocking tight ends and move them to the outside since I hardly pass anyway

If you're running the triple option out of shotgun then you need speed, speed, and some more speed. You can have success with slower running backs, but this offense thrives on the ability to use speed to get outside. I wouldn't even bother recruiting a fullback unless you're going to add an I-form to your playbook, but even then you can throw a tight end in to block. Find a guy with 95+ speed and put him in the slot for jet sweeps and receiver options, I've used a pure speed back for this position and had success with it

I would check out this thread also if you're planning on running out of the flex bone. HBFranchise has a great write up on like the third post of that thread. Any other questions just ask and I'll do my best to answer

Re: Tips to building a Triple Option Team

1. TE is your friend, recruit straight receiving TE to help fill your needs at WR. Once those A backs reach the outside, you want someone throwing down outside. Might even find some smaller TE to help at FB if you need.
2. Power back-> is your fullback
3. Speed for your RB
4. Agility, Juke, Spin are crucial at QB.
5. If QB is hard, recruit a RB/WR and move to QB. RS him and let his stats build till his RS Jr year and go beast.

Speed speed speed. FB needs at least 85 to be effective.
