Only Dusty...

This quote comes from an article about Chapman.

Quote:
"I doubt they even had a pitch count" in Cuba, Baker said. "That's very important. Sometimes you can under-pitch a guy if he's used to throwing. I see him out there throwing long-toss. He throws every day. This winter was probably the longest he's been off in his whole career. You just hope you don't un-train him."

So, should the Reds schedule the TJ surgery now, or wait a few months?

Re: Only Dusty...

I think the words came out wrong. I shudder as I type this but what Dusty is saying probably makes some sense. I mean in Cuba Chapman probably threw 120+ pitches every 3 days etc etc. He hasn't pitched since he defected and has only been throwing a little bit.

It's kinda like when you have a reliever in the bullpen and don't use him for a week and a half and he loses his effectiveness.

At least that's what I hope he's saying. If he's saying he's gonna throw out there and throw 100+ pitches every single start against the best baseball competition in the world then um....yeah.

Unfortunately there are so many people who hate Dusty Baker it doesn't matter what he meant because they will take it the worst way no matter what.

Re: Only Dusty...

Dusty greasing the skids to wear out another young arm on the basis of not "under" training him.

Yep.

I generally agree with what SPTO said. Or I hope that's what he meant.

If not...

Wha...?

That depends, do you think he is anything more than a manager who runs his pitchers into the ground and is largely average at every other aspect of managing?

If your answer is yes, then no, he's not overrated. If you think he is something other/better than that, then yes, he's very overrated.
