Who'd a thought Wayne Fontes would represent the "good ol' days" for Lions fans?

Actually Darryl Rogers was the coach before Fontes. Fontes is also incredibly enough, the winningest coach in Lions history(!)

As for Monte Clark R.I.P. His biggest contribution is that he gave Marty Schottenheimer one of, if not his very first coaching job. I have a '78 game against the Bills and Schottenheimer can be seen on the sidelines.

And not only that. I believe Bill Belichick was an intern on Monte Clark's coaching staff back then as well (late '70s).

Clark did some good things and often had the team playing at a respectable level. It's too bad he also had numerous clashes with then-general manager Russ Thomas which led to his firing.

The Lions' shining moment under Clark was in 1983 in the NFC playoff game against the 49ers. The Lions weren't supposed to have a chance against the 49ers that year, yet still almost beat San Francisco in the divisional round of the playoffs. Friggin' Eddie Murray of all people choked on his last-minute field goal attempt and the Lions ended up losing 24-23. I was too young to remember everything about this game but my older brother and cousins always remind me of the way it played out.

And who can forget "Another One Bites The Dust"? It was the Lions rallying song during the early '80s.
