Coaching Families

As a Minnesota sports fan, we seem to have a lot of nepotism, I'm wondering if this is normal around the league. We do it in football as well as other sports, but I don't know other teams coaching staffs so I can't tell. Here is what I can find, do other teams have the same issues?

NFL

Mike Zimmer (HC) - Adam Zimmer (Co-DC)
Gary Kubiak (OC) - Klint Kubiak (QB Coach)
Andre Patterson (Co-DC) - AC Patterson (Position Coach)
Norv Turner (OC) - Scott Turner (QB Coach)

NBA

Flip Saunders (GM/HC) - Ryan Saunders (HC)
Rick Adelman (HC) - RJ Adelman (coach)

MLB

Ron Gardenhire (Manager) - Toby Gardenhire (Minor league coach)
Joe Mauer (Player) - Jake Mauer (A Coach)

Re: Coaching Families

Two of Pete Carrolls sons were on his staff.. one is leaving to run a college offense (Arizona)

Belichick, obviously..

.. I don't have a problem with it, really. No coach will last long if its clear he can't do the job.

Re: Coaching Families

The only time I remember this being a big controversy was when Bobby Bowden promoted his son, Jeff, to FSU's offensive coordinator in 2001 following Mark Richt's departure to UGA.

The start of the new century was the beginning of the end of FSU's dominance over the ACC that had stretched over the 80s and 90s. The offense, in particular, was a major problem as the team consistently failed to develop talent at their key skill positions. Jeff, deservedly, received a lot of criticism for the playcalling. It was also the first time that Bobby had ever felt heat from the FSU faithful. After FSU got shutout 30-0 by Wake Forest at home, Jeff was fired.

Re: Coaching Families

As a fellow Minnesotan, I have had a much bigger issue with cronyism. Like Tom Kelly dragging Dick Such around for half my life. Of you watched them day in, day out, you'd see Dick just stand out on the mound without a word, then mumble something like"Your pissing Tom off"...Denny Green and his buddy Richard Soliman coaching the secondary to some of the historically nonsensical play I've ever seen (Just from Orlando Thomas alone)...

I felt a little of the same was going on with Rick Anderson and Gardy too..

Definitely happens everywhere in sports. It's hard to break that inner circle.

Just to comment on the last post. Gardy and Rick Anderson had their time but the game passed them by really quickly. I was so happy to see them go. You saw what they did after they teamed back up in Detroit...

Re: Coaching Families

Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan. Mike was the HC and Kyle was the OC.

I kinda liked those days though well 2012 at least unfortunately it did end pretty badly.
