I think that is the forechecking visual indicators but I may be wrong. It is is the Visual Settings

I would go into Practice mode like others said and practice shooting/passing/deking to get the hang of it. Shooting the puck every chance you get will not score most of the time. You need to set up...

I had the same problem too so I changed the difficulty to all star and messed with the sliders a bit and it helped. Longer periods also help
