Could it be that the developers couldn't figure out how to "toughen up" the pitching, so they decided that adding a "beach ball distraction" would help to produce more realistic box scores?...

Me thinks the (pre)viewer of the game was given a bug in the ear by 2K, or he heard through the grapevine that many were complaining about the previous preview.
