It's not so much that it neccessary plays too fast, it's just they really need to work on the collision detection a bit. Two players will engage in a tackle animation much sooner than they should and...

It is still very possible to get pile-on tackling doen with this engine. It would just take a monumental effort, at least to make sure it doesn't look out of place.

I agree. I don't think there's a better looking sports game out there. Though I'm sure Madden 07 will give it a run for it's money.

But could you imagine how awkward all of the animations will be...

Actually, quite the opposite is true. The new engine actually increased the length of the animations, making pile-on tackling a more difficult addition than before. Why did 2k's pile-on tackling work...
