That is a mechanic they had in very old 2k games. It made your guy jump very high straight up and down then swat at the ball. Just pressing Y would give you the weak low vertical animations you get a...

On a side note....When I'm running out to contest a jumper I'd like to be able to jump off one foot. I'm so sick of being a little late and trying to jump at a shot only to have my man take a dump...
