    2012 OSFM: Top Prospects

I am going to start working on the top prospects right now.

I am stingy when it comes to A potential players and feel that A ratings should be dedicated to players with All-Star potential. I, on the other hand also believe that players with unlimited ceilings should also be considered A potential, but wont rate them accordingly.

I am going to take a look and see what we have and I will report back. As of now there are 26 positional A rated players and 13 pitchers.

    Re: 2012 OSFM: Top Prospects

    This will be interesting.

For perspective, I had 29 position players in the A range and 27 pitchers in the A range, so that means based on a 26/13 split, C.J. Cron, Austin Hedges, and Marcel Osuna get left out (and even Rymer Liriano if we include him). As for pitchers, only Dylan Bundy, Gerrit Cole, Shelby Miller, Trevor Bauer, Archie Bradley, Matt Harvey, Tyler Skaggs, Martin Perez, Jameson Taillon, Taijuan Walker, James Paxton, Manny Banuelos, and Yu Darvish would get the nod. Danny Hultzen, Carlos Martinez, A.J. Cole, and Jarred Cosart would be among those left out.

I actually found 30 A rated positional players out of the box and 14 pitchers.

Hmm... to avoid redundancy on my two teams, whoever I see created here I will just leave a place holder, maybe just the players initial and have Knight or whoever import those players.

So far I have three overlapping prospects, all with the Diamondbacks:

                  Trevor Bauer
                  Archie Bradley
                  Tyler Skaggs

Coincidentally they are the only A's I have for the Diamondbacks, so it works out fine.

Maybe we should have everyone who is working on a team just do the whole team and then I will rate the prospects accordingly and ARoid will do the faces. Seems less redundant to me.

Yeah, I have an A prospect on the stock Braves Roster, that I'll probably just move to the Free Agents for roster making, as the Braves only have B and below now that all of their A prospects are in the SCEA roster.

Yea, sorry Ksig, I was a little confused of the process. At first I thought you guys were making them and then I thought we were making them to send to ARoid for faces and then to you to touch up ratings and stuff.

The roster I posted for ARoid to grab had Brown, Cespedes, Choice, Cole, and Panik. All of them A's...so I'm guessing Cole and Panik needed to be B's instead.

Apologies, if you need me to resend a B version or anything else, let me know.

I'm working on both the Giants and A's....so let me know what you need from me for these teams.

Mayo and Law are as good as it gets when it comes to prospect scouting. I'd link Law's list, but you need espn insider to view it. I hope this can help you guys out with any prospect questions. Good luck and thank you for all of your hard work.

You can find Jonathan Mayo's list by googling Mayo prospect watch list 2012

                            The Guidelines

                            • The rankings are limited to players who still have rookie eligibility; that means they have yet to exceed 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the majors and have not yet spent 45 days on the active roster of a major league club, excluding call-ups during the roster expansion period after Sept. 1.

                            • Only players who have signed professional contracts are eligible.

                            • I do not consider players with experience in Nippon Professional Baseball "prospects" for the purposes of this exercise, which means no Yu Darvish.

                            • When ranking players, I consider scouting reports on players -- usually my own, supplementing with conversations with other scouts and front-office executives as needed -- as well as performance, adjusted for age and context. I've made one adjustment in my ranking philosophy in recent years, favoring higher-upside prospects over lower-ceiling prospects who are closer to the majors. This better reflects how these players are valued now by front offices and scouting departments, and gives me a chance to deliver more information on prospects whose names or scouting reports might be new to you.

                            • I use the 20-80 grading scale in these comments to avoid saying "average" and "above average" thousands of times across the 100 player comments. On that scale, a grade of 50 equals major league average, 55 is above average, 60 is plus, 45 is fringy or below average and so on. Mike Stanton has 80 raw power. Bengie Molina has 20 speed. An average fastball for a right-hander is 90-92 mph, with 1-2 mph off for a lefty.

                            • I've included last year's rank for players who appeared in the top 100 last offseason. An "ineligible" player (IE) was still an amateur at this time last January, whereas an "unranked" player (UR) was eligible but didn't make the cut. I've also tagged players who were on last year's sleepers list or list of 10 players who just missed the cut.
