    Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

I think all the impending max contracts is interesting:

    1. Kyle Lowry, who turned 31 in March, who has abysmal shooting percentages in the playoffs.

    2. Chris Paul, who will turn 32 in May. Still playing at a very high level, key to his team, helped negotiate the "super max" deal that he's eligible to get.

    3. Blake Griffin, who just turned 28, eligible for a big payday. Though only 28, his dunk numbers have declined the last few seasons and along with Paul have failed to get past the second-round of the playoffs.

    4. Isaiah Thomas, 28, who had an MVP-like season this year but the Celtics may get a high pick in a draft full of PG prospects.

    5. Steph Curry, 29, two-time MVP, underpaid.

Most of these guys are expected to re-sign with their current teams, except maybe IT?

Then there are the wing players who, for whatever reason, are seen as likely to be traded or sign with other teams, leaving a lot of money on the table, when they hit free agency after the 2018 or 2019 seasons:

    1. Paul George
    2. Jimmy Butler
    3. Gordon Hayward

I'm sure these guys would like to win but they're all on playoffs teams so they may not necessarily move to teams which are stronger contenders than the teams they're already on now. Plus they'd be giving up tens of millions to do so.

I think the best case scenario for Boston would be to land either Ball or Faultz and then get George/Butler/or Hayward while letting IT move on or trade him for something in return. They do that and they become the best team in the EC.

By drafting a rookie and moving their all star for a different all star?

I don't think that is going to instantly make them much if any better than they are now. Especially considering if those lose Thomas their game plan has to drastically change from one year to the next.

Though technically, are they not already the best team in the east as the one seed. lol

Hard to be the best team in the East if you're still in Rebuild Mode.

The combo of Ball or Faultz and George or Butler makes them significantly better on D and George/Butler can make up for IT's scoring and the rookie PG fills the playmaker role. All around win for Boston

IT is said to be touchy about the notion that Boston would draft a PG.

Obviously he believes the team is a couple of players away from competing against any team.

I think Avery Bradley is a FA there too.

I don't buy into the notion of a teenager who has played zero NBA minutes makes you anymore of a contender.

                Celtics upcoming FA's btw.

As a GM I would hate to be in the position of having my star player be a small guard in his late 20s/early 30s with the expectation that he's going to get max or near max money on a 5-6 year deal.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

On the surface, no...but this is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts in awhile and has especially talented point guards. But the bigger factor for being a contender is landing one of those top FA SFs

Agree someone like a George, Butler or Hayward needs to be added. Bench and front court must also be revamped. Bench can't score consistently enough and the front court is soft as ****.

The way Utah has played with all of the injuries this year, I really don't think Hayward is going anywhere. I think we sold him on the potential of this team. If we make it past the Clippers without Gobert, that's just the icing on the cake.

                            Big If.

Clippers let the Jazz get away with a clearly hobbled Favors for a big portion of the game.

DJ and Griffin should have dominated the boards inside, including offensive rebound put backs, though Hayward helped out with the boards.

But Jazz may not be able to get away with it all series. I remember when the Warriors had to play the Clippers in the first round without Bogut and with Draymond Green in his rookie year having to play a lot guarding Griffin.

Actually it was kind of a revelation of how effective he would be as a defender.

Warriors took it to game 7 and were competitive in that final game for at least a half before the Clippers put them away at the end.

Should be an interesting offseason for the Heat especially with Bosh's contract coming off the books.

Wonder if Riley will bring back Waiters or go after a top SF. I still have faith that Josh Richardson will blossom next season - injuries hampered his development imo.

We definitely need to re-sign James Johnson who has proved his worth. Just need to find a way to dump McBob's contract.
