Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Damn Southern Miss...looks like the Green Wave once again fell victim to the whole "one team beating you twice" thing. There always seems to be a one week hangover, sadly.

Good to see a win against Arkansas. There's still a strong postseason to play for.

I too think it's ridiculous to suggest Geezy is going anywhere anytime soon, kind of reminds me of Cheese's storyline with Coach Clayton a few seasons back.

In an ideal world (at least in my eyes), the following happens:

Oklahoma beats Georgia Tech next week
      TCU beats Boise
      Southern Miss wins out
Tulane beats TCU in a few weeks
Georgia Tech beats Florida State in the ACC Title Game

That would mean Southern Miss finally gets their shot to play in the National Title Game and maybe possibly hopefully finally get an invite to the SEC. Though I'd be okay seeing Bama play any of TCU/Boise/USM contingent. Curious to know if there's any team in particular you want to see take on Bama?

I know Boise won a title very early in your dynasty but it's so cool to see the small conference teams up so high in the rankings with a real shot for respect.
Thanks for the great feedback man...

I decided at some point a few weeks back that I was going to let the offense flow through Lawson from here on out. The comp to Ryan Jean is definitely there. Lawson drops one every now and then, unlike Jean (5 drops this season and 11 last season), but the size and speed combo is certainly on-point and tough for defenses to defend against. He has 955 yards on only 36 catches, good for a whopping 26.5 ypc average!

Cheese and I are just a like - we crave the adversity and hang on to any tiny little hint of it. Truth is though, if this was real life and with all he's accomplished, Coach Geezy would have a ticket to coach at Tulane for however long he wants.

As far as who I want in the national championship; that's a great question. I don't think I really have a preference, however the Southern Miss vs. Alabama storyline would be sweet. Truth is, I don't see any team beating Bama, and they should cruise to becoming the first team of this dynasty to win back-to-back national titles.

If I had to put money on it though, I say Georgia Tech will be their opponent.

Thanks brother...While I don't know if he is truly on the "hot seat" so to speak, it does worry me a bit that year-after-year, the contract goals aren't being met and next season is the last year of the contract. Every year, the goals are to win the SEC, finish in the top 10, and play in a major bowl, and we have missed out on all three for three straight years now, with a fourth straight year of it looming. So while it is a remote possibility that the contract doesn't get renewed, it still is a possibility IMO.

Southern Miss in Hattiesburg is a mind-game at this point. They have absolutely owned us in their building thoughout this entire Part II saga. And they're not going away any time soon, because they've been recruiting very well - in fact, they currently have the #11 recruiting class in the nation!

There is indeed a lot still to play for. If we can get past Ole Miss (which hasn't always been a gimme for us), then that date with TCU will loom large in our bid for a BCS bowl appearance. Not to mention the fact that the Horned Frogs very well could be playing for a national title shot as well.

Despite no longer being in the national title mix, these last couple of games offer plenty of intrigue and excitement for me. We have never been an At-Large BCS bowl team, and I really would like to play in a BCS bowl game not named the Sugar Bowl for once.

Thanks guys...I appreciate the replies as always!

Game 11, Year 16 Preview (2025 season): Ole Miss Rebels at #12 Tulane Green Wave

        GAME 11 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

        ....................15 1/2....................

2024: Freshmen Jimmy McBride (LEFT) and J.J. Williams (RIGHT) each played a pivotal role in helping the Green Wave win for the first time in nearly a month during last year's late season contest.

Last Meeting: Last season, then-#24 ranked Tulane scored 14 unanswered fourth quarter points en route to pulling away from Ole Miss for a 41-23 victory at chilly Oxford. Then-redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride, making his first start after being benched earlier in the year due to poor performance, finished with 273 passing yards and 3 total touchdowns (1 passing, 2 rushing) to help the Green Wave defeat the Rebels for the fourth straight year. Then-true freshman FB J.J. Williams had the best performance of his career, carrying the ball 10 times for 131 yards, including the game-sealing 77-yard touchdown run with 2:42 remaining in the game, helping the Wave improve its record to 8-3 on the year.

2023: Down 38-35 and facing a 3rd and 19 from the Rebels' 28-yard line, QB Obi Clemons' desperation heave into the end zone was deflected by Ole Miss CB Bobby Motley before WR Jason Mason hauled it in while keeping his feet in-bounds for the game-winning touchdown. The circus catch gave Tulane its first lead of the game with only 0:09 remaining in the contest.

Last Meeting at Venue: Two seasons ago, after trailing 38-14 at halftime, then-#7 ranked Tulane was able to reel off 28 unanswered second half points en route to defeating Ole Miss in a 42-38 thriller at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. QB Obi Clemons' 28-yard touchdown pass to WR Jason Mason with :09 remaining gave the Green Wave their only lead of the game as they were able to fend off the Rebels' upset bid. The player of the game for Tulane however was its former RB Tim Powers, who finished the night with a career-high 267 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns as the Wave improved to 9-2 on the year.

Game 11, Year 16 (2025 season): Ole Miss Rebels at #12 Tulane Green Wave

          N/R 29 -- 4-7 (1-7)
          #12 57 -- 9-2 (7-1)

Redshirt sophomore QB Jimmy McBride, who has perfected the art of throwing on the run as displayed on this 14-yard third touchdown pass, played the best game of his career on Saturday and looks to have turned a corner.

QB McBride puts on a passing clinic, torches Ole Miss for 418 yards and 5 touchdowns as Green Wave rolls past Rebels 57-29 | Redshirt sophomore signal caller becomes just the second quarterback ever under head coach D. Geezy to throw for over 400 yards and at least 5 touchdowns without turning the ball over | Two improbable touchdowns before halftime help turn the tide in the Wave's favor | Team will host #9 TCU next week with possible BCS bowl berth on the line for both teams

New Orleans, LA -- Only one other time under head coach D. Geezy has a Tulane passer thrown for at least 400 yards and thrown for at least 5 touchdowns while also not turning the ball over, and it came four years ago in a late season blowout win over Ole Miss at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. This past Saturday night, redshirt junior QB Jimmy McBride joined former Wave QB Bryce Allen in accomplishing the prolific feat, once again versus the Rebels, this time in a 57-29 massacre in New Orleans. McBride, all 5-11 206 pounds of him, finished the game 20 of 33 for 418 yards and 5 touchdowns, posting by far his best statistical performance of his career thus far while leading 12th ranked Tulane to a victory in a game in which they surprisingly trailed 23-21 midway through the second quarter.

WR Grant Brady has been quiet as of late, but his 11-yard touchdown reception along with his later 99-yard kickoff return touchdown provided some first quarter fireworks for Tulane.

The two teams battled back and forth through much of the first quarter, with two touchdowns by true freshman WR Grant Brady (1 receiving, 1 kickoff return) sandwiching a 67-yard touchdown pass by Ole Miss QB Andre Clemons to WR Jasper Adams.

Ole Miss RB J.T. Higgins' 69-yard score with 5:09 remaining in the second quarter gave the Rebels its aforementioned two-point advantage as well as seemingly all of the momentum. Higgins' who finished with over 100 rushing yards despite only carrying the ball 9 times on Saturday, was injured on his team's next possession however and never returned, and the Ole Miss offense was never really the same.

On Tulane's possession after Higgins' score, a routine pass by McBride to RB Tony Tompkins in the flat produced one of the wackiest plays seen all year. Tompkins, still nursing a lingering pectoral injury, turned the swing pass upfield for a 62-yard gain, however he was uncharacteristically caught from behind in the open field by Rebels MLB Dan Berg and stripped of the football. Fortunately for the Wave however, FB J.J. Williams had trailed the play and was able to scoop up the loose football and take it the remaining 25 yards to the house for an unconventional 87-yard touchdown that gave Tulane a 28-23 lead.

The Wave would extend its lead to 31-23 following a 25-yard field goal by PK Aaron Larson, as the Rebels' offense remained stagnant with its star running back nursing a back injury.

The true gut-punch for Ole Miss (4-7) came on the final play of the first half however. After punting the ball back to Tulane with just 0:19 remaining in the half, McBride was able to work magic and complete two passes to get the ball down to the Rebels 37-yard line with just 0:02 to go in the first half. Rather than attempt a long field goal, Geezy decided to take a shot at the end zone, and it would pay dividends as McBride's desperation heave connected with WR Adam Lawson in the back of the end zone and the emerging 6-6 superstar was able to pat both feet down inside of the boundary for a 37-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half. Lawson, who had a 24-yard touchdown earlier in the quarter, finished the game with 6 receptions for 103 yards and the 2 scores.

Averaging 308.6 passing yards per game this season, McBride is now fourth in the nation with 3,395 passing yards with two games remaining.
The Wave would begin to pull away in the third quarter. A 4-play 77-yard drive to start the second half resulted in a 14-yard touchdown pass from McBride to true freshman TE Drew Robinson to increase their team's lead to 45-23. Then, after the Wave gave up a 10-yard touchdown pass by Clemons, Tulane redshirt sophomore CB Benny Smith's interception return on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt extended the lead to 47-29.

"Benny has been a playmaker for us all season long. He was the fifth corner on the depth chart to start the season and we promoted him to dime corner last week and he's going to get some strong consideration to play some time with the ones moving forward," said Geezy of Smith, a former 3-star recruit who came into the game tied for #1 in the nation with two defensive touchdowns this season.

"I can't tell you enough how significant that play was. If they get that two-point conversion, it is now 45-31, and instead, we go up by 18 and I think that took the wind out of their sails," said Geezy.

The game would get put away on the Wave's very next possession when McBride connected with RB Michael Brown Jr. on a screen pass and the 4-star sophomore broke a tackle on his way to a career-long 85-yard touchdown that made the score 54-29 with 4:34 remaining. Brown Jr. finished with a game-high 158 receiving yards. It was McBride's fifth touchdown of the game, and it resulted in Tulane's starting offense being removed for the remainder of the contest.

"The growth we're seeing out of Jimmy right now is something special," said Geezy of McBride, who on Saturday became the first passer under Geezy to throw for over 400 yards in back-to-back games.

"He's really coming into his own and (offensive coordinator) Joe Roberts' system and he have meshed very well. I am really excited for Jimmy, because I think he has many more games like this in him."

Tulane (9-2) will host TCU (10-1) next week at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Horned Frogs, ranked #4 in the country this past weekend, is coming off a heart-breaking 23-17 loss to #5 Boise St. The two teams met last season, a game the Green Wave won 28-23 at Fort Worth. This time however, the stakes could be much greater, as the winner could get a substantial advantage in the race for an at-large BCS bowl berth.

QB Jimmy McBride celebrates following his 85-yard touchdown on a screen pass to RB Michael Brown Jr. that made the score 54-29 and essentially put the game away in the third quarter.

Redshirt sophomore QB Jimmy McBride led the pregame huddle with his troops prior to kickoff, as he continues to ascend into a leadership role.

Often-criticized FS Terrell Faulk mis-timed his jump and Ole Miss WR Jasper Adams hauled in the football for a 67-yard touchdown that gave the Rebels the lead right back at 10-7.

Brady's third kickoff return touchdown this season following Adams' score put the Wave back ahead at 14-10 in what was a wild first half.

MLB Mario Young, who leads Tulane with 6 sacks, took down Rebels QB Andre Clemons once on Saturday.

WR Adam Lawson continued his late season tear, hauling in 6 receptions for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns and now has 1,058 receiving yards and 9 scores on the year, including this 24-yard second quarter touchdown that made the score 21-13.

Tulane DE T.J. Pearson comes over to congratulate McBride on the bench following the 24-yard second quarter touchdown pass to Lawson that extended the Wave's lead to 21-13.

Tulane's much-maligned defense could not stop Ole Miss RB J.T. Higgins as he finished with 126 rushing yards on only 9 carries in less than two quarters of action. Higgins would leave the game in the second quarter due to a back injury, and Ole Miss' offense was never the same.

On one of the craziest play of the 2025 college football season, Tulane RB Tony Tompkins fumbled at the end of a 62-yard reception and FB J.J. Williams recovered and took it the remaining 26 yards before diving into the end zone for an emphatic touchdown that gave the Wave a 28-23 lead in the second quarter.

Lawson successfully tapped his toes down on this incredible 37-yard touchdown reception versus CB Bobby Motley that extended Tulane's lead to 38-23 as the first half clock expired. It was familiar territory for Motley, as he was victimized on a game-winning touchdown versus Tulane two seasons ago at the Superdome in the very same end zone corner.

True freshman Drew Robinson, Tulane's #2 tight end, caught his first career touchdown pass Saturday night and WR Adam Lawson came over to show him some love.

Redshirt sophomore CB Benny Smith, who is tied for the nation's lead with two defensive touchdowns, continued his play-making ways on Saturday when he intercepted this two-point pass attempt and took it to the house to extend the Wave's lead to 47-29 following a Rebels touchdown.

RB Michael Brown Jr., who had a game-high 148 receiving yards, got most of it on this 85-yard touchdown on a screen pass that made the score 54-29 and essentially put the game away.

Smith is tied for the FBS lead with 2 defensive touchdowns and also has a 2-pt conversion return this season.

Tulane | Cornerback Smith promoted to starter
              Tue, 25 Nov 2025 02:08:09 -0700

report courtesy Erin Andrews, FOX Sports

Erin Andrews of FOX Sports reports that, after displaying consistent play-making ability, Tulane redshirt sophomore CB Benny Smith (73 ovr) has been promoted from dime cornerback to the #2 cornerback position on the team's depth chart and will start in this weekend's potential BCS bowl play-in game versus #9 TCU. Senior CB Jamaal Green (73 ovr), the Wave's now-former starter, will move to nickel corner, and sophomore CB J.T. Hills (71 ovr) will slide down from nickel to dime.

Smith, a former 3-star recruit out of Humble, Texas in 2023, is tied for the FBS lead with 2 defensive touchdowns this season, both coming on fumble returns. He also was credited with a defensive two-point conversion during last week's win over Ole Miss. The 6-2 169 pound defensive back started the year out as the team's #5 cornerback, and has played his way into the lineup.

Smith has 10 tackles, 1 sack, 2 fumble recovery touchdowns, and one defensive 2-pt return this season. He currently is tied with four other players for the FBS lead this year with his two defensive touchdowns.

"Benny is a guy that even before this past game, we were looking at possibly moving up the depth chart," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy, who indicated that the move was in no way an indictment on Green, but rather a reward to Smith.

"He made plays for us on special teams early in the year and got noticed, and then he made a big play on defense and we moved him to the dime spot. The play he made this past weekend on the two-point conversion just kind of solidified it for us. This young man has earned this promotion. He is still young with good size and speed and we think he has a bright future ahead.

Tulane | TCU CB Pacman Johnson eager to face old team
              Tue, 25 Nov 2025 19:23:17 -0700

              report courtesy Molly McGrath, ESPN

Molly McGrath of ESPN reports that former Tulane and current TCU redshirt junior CB Adam "Pacman" Johnson (81 ovr) is looking forward to facing his old squad in this weekend's critical game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Johnson, who left the Green Wave citing playing time promises that weren't kept along with reported clashing with former Wave defensive coordinator Steve Ellis, spoke to McGrath following his team's Tuesday practice.

"I don't have any ill will towards Coach Geezy and I hate that it didn't work out in New Orleans," said Johnson, who is the Frogs' dime cornerback and plays on all coverage units . "At the same time though, to get the chance to finish the regular season at the dome, with a possible BCS bowl on the line, it don't get much better than that.

Geezy also took the high road in talking about Johnson, a former 4-star recruit out out Maysville, Kentucky.

"Pacman is a guy that just hadn't found his way yet and he had some personal conflicts to get through during his time here. Not everyone is going to get along with everyone," said Geezy of Johnson, who was credited with 2 tackles and a fumble recovery during the two teams' meeting last season at Fort Worth. "It's really a shame that it didn't work out, because he probably would have been a 2 or 3 year starter here, and over there, he is in the same position now that he was as a freshman.

"It is what it is though and we wish him the best."

Johnson this season has 17 tackles to go along with 1 interception and a 1/2 sack.

Tulane | 3-star Canadian athlete commits, early signing period wrapped up
              Tue, 25 Nov 2025 20:43:09 -0700

              report courtesy Eve Jewell, TulaneInsider.com

Eve Jewell of TulaneInsider.com reports that 3-star Canadian athlete Stephen Thompson (6-4, 200, 4.42 40-time, #62 rated ATH) has committed to Tulane. Thompson, a Hamilton, Ontario native, has only played one season of American high school football in Canada, and is considered a very raw project by most draft analysts.

According to Jewell's sources, Thompson will likely project as a defensive back at the collegiate level, and will most likely be redshirted. However at 6-4 and with 4.42 speed, he could see early playing time on special teams.

Thompson's signing brings the Green Wave's number of committments up to 16 and wraps up the team's early signing period haul, currently ranked #3 in the nation.

Recruiting class shaping up nicely so far, although it’s a shame that you missed out on that safety early in the year to OSU no less. Good luck versus TCU!

Ha...I had forgotten about Jesse Burnette. Crazy to think that my last post about him was almost 3 months ago! Yes, I hate that I wasn't able to nab him; his 95 speed would have been a godsend for our talent-depleted safety group.

I am happy with the DB's we got, but I just wish we were able to add more speed. Hopefully something shakes loose in the off-season for us.

I am pretty hyped up for this TCU game. I didn't think I'd be this emotionally invested in trying to secure a BCS bowl berth, but I am and I cannot wait for Saturday to get here!

                  Thanks for checking in!

Thanks, brother. It's been a fun ride this year. I didn't think I'd still be this into a season in which a national title is no longer in the cards, but I am having more fun than ever merely chasing a bigger bowl game while also getting this team ready for another shot at ring #3 next season!

Game 12, Year 16 Preview (2025 season): #9 TCU Horned Frogs at #11 Tulane Green Wave

                        GAME 12 PREVIEW

                        Courtesy

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

                        ....................Pick'em ....................

2024: Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride's 4-yard touchdown pass to true freshman FB J.J. Williams made the score 21-10 in the third quarter. The scoring hook-up was both McBride's first career touchdown pass and also Williams' first career touchdown.

Last Meeting: In game 2 of the 2024 season, then-#12 ranked Tulane fell behind 7-0 early to then-#11 TCU, however they'd eventually amass a 28-10 fourth quarter lead before holding on for a 28-23 victory last season at Fort Worth. Making his first career start, redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride threw for 259 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score in relief of former Green Wave QB Bryce Allen, who was injured in the team's season opener last year and missed most of his senior season. RB Tony Tompkins also had a terrific day, carrying the ball 21 times for 124 yards and a score, and former Wave superstar and current Rams SS Jonathan Smith finished the game with 7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and a touchdown, helping Tulane team improve to 2-0 on the young season.

2003: 22 years ago, former Tulane QB J.P. Losman almost led his team to a thrilling comeback win over TCU, but fell just short.

Last Meeting at Venue: Both Tulane and TCU resided in Conference USA together for four seasons from 2001-2004, and they last played each other at the Superdome all the way back in 2003. In that game, both teams' Conference USA opener that year, the Green Wave faced a 31-7 fourth quarter deficit and mounted a furious comeback before falling just short in a 38-35 defeat to the Horned Frogs. Former Green Wave quarterback and future NFL first round pick J.P. Losman finished the game with 303 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, however the Wave's inability to get former NFL RB Mewelde Moore and its ground game going early put them too far behind to complete the rally.

                        Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

Tulane head coach D. Geezy addressed the media Friday morning.

This is a team that we are very familiar with, as we share a lot of the same recruiting ground. RB James Walters, WR Lee Bradley, OLB Bryan Anderson, CB Spencer Booth, and FS Robert Bryant are not only guys we recruited in recent years, but they were in-fact centerpiece, top-of-the-board players for us that we missed out on. Not to mention CB Pacman Johnson, who we did get but he ended up transferring to TCU a few years back.

Tulane will break out their all-green attire for Saturday's regular season finale.

This is definitely the most challenging offense we're going to face this season, and a lot of it has to do with not just their talent, but their personnel deployments; they use their tight ends in a very unique way. Their third TE Sam Jacobs is used as their #3 receiver in the slot, their starting TE Thomas Webster is used as the #4 receiver, and they use their second TE Brian Robinson as both their fullback and also as the second tight end when they use ACE personnel. It is very difficult to match personnel when the same guys are all on the field together and used in multiple sets.

Then you also have two running backs - RB Demetrius Young is more of a scatback and has over 1,000 yards, and Walters is a 6-5 220 pound brusier that has almost 900 yards this season. And oh by the way, you have to deal with a 6-6 200 pound WR Lee Bradley and a quarterback in Marcus Matthews that is in the Heisman conversation. They have the top scoring offense in the nation and our defense is going to have its hands full.

Defensively, they deploy a 4-2-5 and have one of the best secondaries we're going to see. They like to use SS David Carter close to the line of scrimmage, and he's going to be a game-changer at the NFL level next season. They like to use Bryant as a single-high safety, and at 604 with 4.32 speed, he has the range and wingspan to cover a lot of ground. They're just an impressive group overall and it is no surprise that they are statistically the #1 defense in the nation. In fact, before last week, they hadn't given up more than 7 points in any game they've played and have pitched five shutouts this season - yeah.

We are going into this with a playoff mindset. The winner here very likely earns a berth in a BCS bowl game and that means a lot to us. This also very likely could be our seniors' final game played at the Superdome, and we hope to put bring our 'A' game and have them go out with a bang.

Game 12, Year 16 (2025 season): #9 TCU Horned Frogs at #11 Tulane Green Wave

                          x#9 27 -- 11-1
                          #11 17 -- 9-3

Tulane junior PK Aaron Larson grimaces after hooking a 43-yard field goal with 2:13 remaining in the game, his third of a whopping four field goal misses on the afternoon.

PK Larson's dreadful performance leaves #11 Tulane on the outside looking in at the BCS field in gut-wrenching 27-17 regular season finale loss to #9 TCU | Despite coming into the game with only two misses this season, normally reliable junior fails to convert on 4 of his 5 attempts | Green Wave offense gives up two crucial touchdowns off turnovers, goes ice cold in second half | Losers of 3 of their final 5 games, Wave now awaits its bowl destination

New Orleans, LA -- Prior to Saturday, no Tulane place kicker under head coach D. Geezy had missed more than two field goals in a single game; in fact, even missing two field goals in a single game was a rarity, having happened in only 5 of the previous 215 games he's coached the Wave. That all changed this past weekend however, as PK Aaron Larson's horrendous 1 for 5 performance doomed #11 Tulane in a 27-17 defeat to #9 TCU. The Green Wave's margin of error was already razor-thin against the nation's top scoring offense and top ranked defense, but Larson's failure to convert kicks along with two touchdowns given up by the team's offense via turnovers doomed the Green Wave to their third loss in the last five games.

OLB Bryan Anderson, a Louisiana native that Tulane recruited in 2023, scored after recovering teammate Eric Bryant's fumble off an interception. It was the first of two scores by the Horned Frogs' vaunted defense.

The game would feature three defensive touchdowns in total between the two teams, the first coming fairly early on in the contest. Two plays after Larson banged a 52-yard field goal attempt off the crossbar, CB Jamaal Green, recently demoted from starter to nickel back this past week, stepped in front of TCU WR Titus Thompson to pick off QB Marcus Matthews' pass attempt and it was returned 35 yards for a touchdown that gave the Wave a 7-3 advantage in the first quarter. On TCU's very next possession, Thompson got the last laugh however, as he would beat Green on a corner-flag route to come away with a 22-yard touchdown reception, giving the visiting team the lead back at 10-7.

Later, in the second quarter, the Green Wave put together a 10-play drive which resulted in an 8-yard touchdown pass from QB Jimmy McBride to RB Michael Brown Jr. out of the backfield, giving Tulane a 14-10 lead. Brown Jr. was held in check for the most part, finishing the game with 6 receptions for 39 yards, one season after torching the TCU defense with 8 receptions for 99 yards in Tulane's 28-23 win at Fort Worth.

Tulane's defense, which held the vaunted TCU offense to just 13 points on the afternoon, got a stop on the ensuing Horned Frogs possession, and it seemed as though the Green Wave were ready to begin pulling away in front of its sellout crowd of 72,419 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

But that's when things got whacky.

McBride, who came into the game having thrown for at least 359 yards in each of his past four games, would see his pass attempt down the seam sail over the head of TE Ronnie Parsons and into the awaiting hands of TCU FS Eric Bryant. Bryant, once a prized recruiting target of the Wave and the brother of former Wave FS Eric Bryant, would get stripped of the football by WR Adam Lawson, however LB Bryan Anderson, another one-time Wave recruiting target, would scoop it up and return the ball 36 yards for a touchdown, giving the Frogs a 17-14 lead late in the second quarter.

In the first half's closing moments, recently promoted Tulane CB Benny Smith would force WR Lee Bradley to fumble the football after a short reception, giving the Wave possession of the ball deep in Frogs territory with seconds remaining in the half. Larson would convert on a short, 33-yard field goal to tie the game up at 17-17 as the first half clock expired, however that would be the last points the Wave would muster all afternoon and it would be the last ounce of joy Larson would experience the rest of the day.

Larson, a former 3-star recruit out of Kentucky, would see his day turn sour, starting late in the third quarter. With the Wave now down 20-17 following a 43-yard field goal by TCU true freshman PK Brian Thomas, Larson would get the chance to tie the game right back up on the Wave's next possession to conclude a drive which featured a 52-yard pass completion from McBride to Lawson. However, Larson's 44-yard field goal attempt would sail wide right, keeping TCU in front 20-17 with 1:42 remaining in the third quarter, and it was an omen for things to come.

Early in the fourth quarter, disaster struck for one of Larson's teammate though.

Senior RB Tony Tompkins, still not 100% healthy after suffering a torn pectoral injury near mid-season, came into the game with a "probable" tag and had a good 14-carry, 70-yard performance, his highest rushing total since returning from the injury four games ago. However his resurgent day would get marred when Horned Frogs freshman DT Dylan Wilson stuffed him behind the line of scrimmage and stripped him of the football. After the ball laid on the turf for a brief moment, OLB Tim Harper would recover it and return it 55 yards for a touchdown, extending the Frogs' lead to 27-17 with 7:25 remaining. Tompkins has been fumble prone throughout his time in New Orleans, putting the football on the turf a total of 21 times over his four year career via offense and on special teams.

Senior RB Tony Tompkins was stripped of the football by TCU freshman DT Dylan Wilson and sophomore OLB Tim Harper recovered it and took it the distance for a back-breaking touchdown that made the score 27-17 with 7:25 remaining.

"You just can't be careless with the football, especially against a great football team like TCU," said Geezy, who admitted that he knew the team was taking a risk by playing Tompkins at less than 100%.

"Tony was not able to grip the football as well as he liked because of his soreness, and that played a role on the play. We stressed him always keeping two hands on the football in traffic, and he just got caught slipping there with a defensive lineman in his face almost as soon as he took the hand-off."

With still plenty of time remaining, the now-cold Green Wave offense got going, hitting on several deep passes to get into scoring position. However each time, the TCU defense would buckle down and force field goals, much to Larson's chagrin.

Larson could do nothing but hold his head down after missing a 51-yard field goal attempt with 0:58 remaining, capping off what he called during the postgame locker room session "the worst day of my life."
A 43-yard field goal that could have made it a one possession game was hooked, leaving the score at 27-17 with 2:13 remaining.

Down by 10, the Green Wave defense would step up and get yet another stop versus the Frogs' offense while exhausting timeouts to conserve time. McBride and the Wave offense, desperately in need of at least a field goal to keep the team in the game, got the ball back into field goal range once again with just over a minute remaining. However, Larson's 51-yard attempt from the right hash would end up going wide left with 0:58 to go, putting an end to a miserable performance, and an end to Tulane's chances to win.

"I thought the defense was phenominal today, our offense and special teams just didn't hold up its end of the bargain," said Geezy, who praised defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar's usage of the 3-3-5 an 2-4-5 alignments to confuse Matthews and the Horned Frogs' defense.

"They made their place kicks, and we didn't make ours. Not only that, but we gave up two touchdowns to their defense. You miss four field goals and give up two scores off turnovers, and you're probably going to lose 99 out of 100 times."

The loss for Tulane drops their record to 9-3, and puts them out of contention for a much-coveted BCS Bowl berth. The Green Wave, who has missed out on winning the SEC Championship for a fourth straight season, will now await next week's BCS Bowl Selection Show to find out its postseason destination. But, as has happened seemingly with more regularity than ever, Geezy and his team knows they let another opportunity slip away this season.

"You're certainly saddened about the outcome, because we had a lot in front of us and the possibility of playing in a BCS Bowl was a big deal to us," said Geezy.

"You feel bad for your seniors, you feel bad for Tony, you feel bad for Aaron, and of course you feel bad for your fans. This one is going to hurt for awhile."

The Tulane faithful hit the exits early after Larson's missed field goal with 0:58 to go clinched the loss for the Green Wave.

                          END OF REGULAR SEASON

Seen here during pregame warm-ups, Tulane QB Jimmy McBride came into the game red hot, having thrown for at least 359 yards in each of his past four games.

CB Benny Smith, promoted this week to the team's #2 cornerback spot on the depth chart, celebrates after swatting away a deep pass attempt to 6-6 TCU WR Lee Bradley in the first quarter.

Redshirt senior CB Jamaal Green, a former 2-star recruit out of Hawaii that now serves as the team's nickel back following Smith's promotion, caught an interception in front of WR Titus Thompson and returned it 35 yards to give the Green Wave an early 7-3 advantage.

Thompson quickly returned the favor to Green on the Horned Frogs' next possession following the pick-six, showing off his toe-dragging skills on this 22-yard touchdown reception that gave his team a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter.

RB Demetrius Young was unspectacular but still gashed the porous Green Wave rushing defense for 106 yards on only 14 carries.

Unlike last season's contest between the two teams, TCU held RB Michael Brown Jr. in check, however the sophomore did beat fellow sophomore MLB Jake Johnson on an option route out of the backfield and hauled in McBride's pass for an 8-yard touchdown that gave Tulane a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

FS Robert Bryant, the brother of former Tulane FS Eric Bryant and a player the Green Wave recruited heavily back in 2022, came away with this first half interception. After fumbling the ball away, his teammate Bryan Anderson, another one-time Green Wave recruiting target and Louisiana native, would scoop the ball up and return it the remaining 36 yards for a touchdown that put the Frogs up 17-14 in the second quarter.

Smith continued his stellar debut as the team's #2 cornerback and celebrated after he stripped Young of the football and OLB Sean Williamson recovered, setting the Wave up deep in TCU territory for an eventual game-tying field goal that made the score 17-17 at halftime.

6-6 WR Adam Lawson was matched up versus the 6-4 Bryant and got the best of him on this 52-yard third quarter reception. The big play would lead to no points however, as PK Aaron Larson would miss a 44-yard field goal attempt with 1:42 to go in the quarter.

Despite what the scoreboard shows, Tulane's defense stifled TCU most of the game, led in part by redshirt freshman DT Byron Henderson's 2 sack performance.

TCU junior DE B.J. Newby wreaked havoc on Saturday, sacking Tulane QB Jimmy McBride twice as the Horned Frogs defense would finish the afternoon with 4 sacks as a team.

Disappointed senior TE Ronnie Parsons, trailed by an equally upset head coach D. Geezy, walked off the Superdome field for the final time.

                              Oh man......

I recall you mentioning at some point about a sticky right trigger on your controller; is this finally the push you need to try and fix it or was the debacle just an isolated incident that escalated quickly? I appreciate stuff like that happening though - echoes real life, when a kicker misses one and everything just snowballs.

Hopefully the squad shows up and plays hard in your bowl game. Though it may not matter this season, a win could be huge for everyone's confidence going into the offseason and beyond, help put away the ghosts of what might have been and move forward.

Crazy that Boise lost and that Southern Miss actually has a shot to play for a National Title. I'm pulling for South Kackalacki this weekend!

man I hate to say it, but this promising season ended in a pretty dreadful collapse. I thought this would be another title run season, pretty disappointing. Hopefully you can snag a bowl win, I can't imagine the guys are super motivated though. Tough loss, hopefully the kicker can use it as fuel for a bounce back in his senior year.
