Re: RUTGERS NCAA FB DYNASTY- NCAA FB12
Scarlet Knights Hold off Seminoles to Earn First ACC Win
Florida State Comeback Falls Short on Wet, Dreary Afternoon
Week 3, Season 3
September 7, 2013
New Brunswick, NJ
Offense
Rutgers offense was humming today at least for the first half, as the Scarlet Knights scored all of their 35 points in the first two frames. Savon Huggins ran for a career high 175 yards and two scores, while Chas Dodd added two throwing scores of his own, in a 35-32 Rutgers win.
The Scarlet Knights poured it on in the first half of play, scoring from every which way you can think of, minus defensively. Senior wideout Jeremy Deering got the scoring started with a 30 yard TD reception on the teams opening drive. Shortly after a FSU field goal, Savon Huggins would make it 14-3 with his first score on the day.
Despite taking the lead, Dodd would throw two interceptions in the first quarter, luckily for Rutgers, sandwiched in between was a Jameis Winston pick.
Scoring again, Huggins would make it 21-3 with a career long 72 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter. Huggins was touched once before switching directions and running around the pile for the long score.
Rutgers would build the score to 28-6 before Florida State would finally answer.
The Seminoles would have a couple long scores of their own despite the rainy conditions. Running back Devonta Freeman who ran for 153 yards in the game, broke free on an 80 yard TD run of his own, starting the Florida State comeback in the 2nd quarter.
Down 35-18 to open the 2nd half, WR Bobby Watson, a JUCO transfer for Florida State, would bring the "Noles to within 10 with a long 63 yard TD run. Watson would again make his presence known in the final quarter with a 10 yard scoring reception from Jameis Winston bringing his team to within 3.
Jameis Winston would get the ball back with a chance to tie or win the game with 3 minutes left, but would fumble on sack by Rutgers Michael Larrow.
Defense
Both defenses gave up a ton of yards today despite the swampy conditions. Florida State despite giving up so many points would force Chas Dodd interception in the first quarter. Gerald Demps and Jeff Luc were the aggressors.
One of the many pro prospects on Florida State's defense, Telvin Smith led all tacklers with 10 in the game, including a tackle in which Savon Huggins lost 6 yards.
For the Scarlet Knights it was freshman Roderick Watkins who had his best performance to date, with 9 tackles, 3 for loss. Michael Larrow, who forced the huge Jameis Winston fumble in the 4th quarter, recorded 2 sacks in the win.
Special Teams
Rutgers kicking woes continue as this time sophomore Robby Harrell missed short from just 40 yards out, granted it was raining. Coach Ross has said punter Anthony DiPaula may be called upon from here on out. Rutgers was just 1/3 on 4th down today.
Part of Rutgers first half explosion was thanks in part to Brandon Coleman who took a kick-off 97 yards for a TD. The longest in Rutgers history, longer than Mohamed Sanu's 93 yarder, two years ago. The return would make it 35-12 Rutgers and was their final points scored in the game.
Florida State kicker Jason Myers was 2/2 on the day hitting his longest kick of 43 yards. Florida State was 0/2 on 2-point Conversions, those 4 points would have given them the win.
Up Next
Rutgers, now firmly planted in the ACC after getting their first win, will head to Chapel Hill and face the 2-0 Tar Heels. Coming into this week the Tar Heels were receiving some Top 25 votes, though they fell just short.
Rutgers WR Jeremy Deering scores on a 30 yard TD reception where he drags two Seminole defenders into the end zone.
Savon Huggins redirects from the pile and scores on a career long 72 yard TD run.
Florida State WR Bobby Watson breaks free on one of his two LONG scores on the afternoon.
Rutgers Michael Larrow clinches the win in the 4th quarter with a sack/fumble of Jamies Winston.
