It was crazy....I almost started Bubba Downing Jr. because of his speed but I thought he'd be better served getting reps at receiver to prep him for next year when my top two receivers, Richards and Mullins, graduate. Crazy how that turned out.

‣ In-depth scouting: UCLA's offense
Key Players
QB Josh Rosen, Senior ‣ 99 ovr, 99 tha, 87 thp, 74 spd // 209 of 304, 2813 yards, 35 TDs, 4 INTs, 113 carries, 332 yards, 3 TDs.
HB Soso Jamabo, Senior ‣ 97 ovr, 91 spd, 97 acc, 86 car // 195 carries, 1302 yards, 13 TDs
WR Jordan Lasley, Senior ‣ 93 ovr, 92 spd, 98 acc, 91 cth // 83 receptions, 1359 yards, 16 TDs
C Kevin Warren, Junior ‣ 85 ovr, 90 pbk, 82 rbk, 81 str // 8 sacks allowed

Miami's defense will have their hands full against Josh Rosen and Company but Miami has had plenty of experience and success against elite quarterbacks. With impressive showings against Kelly Bryant and J.J. Cosentino, Miami has shown that they can stop the pass and the only question is who can cover Jordan Lasley at six-foot-one with 4.4 speed.

The easy answer is Evan Siegel but I'll be surprised if Miami goes in man at all against Notre Dame. Their base defense has been that 4-2-5 Cover 3 look that allows Derek Nolan to prowl and puts Miami's best athletes in space to make plays. Will that scheme work against a receiver core that has four guys that might play at the next level?

UCLA's weakness is definitely their interior offensive line play, specifically center Kevin Warren and guard Josh Wariboko who have allowed eight and nine sacks respectively. True freshman Taylor Grant and Carlos Green have been phenomenal -- both made all-ACC -- but they'll need to take their game to the next level against Warren and Wariboko to keep Rosen off of his spot.

‣ In-depth scouting: UCLA's defense
Key Players
DT Ainuu Taua, Senior ‣ 96 ovr, 81 str, 97 pmv, 94 bsh // 14 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, sack
OLB Cameron Griffin, Senior ‣ 91 ovr, 87 str, 86 spd, 88 awr // 42 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks
CB Dechaun Holliday, Senior ‣ 92 ovr, 91 spd, 92 acc, 98 mcv // 27 tackles, 6 interceptions
DE Robert Johnson, Freshman ‣ 78 ovr, 73 spd, 78 str, 81 bsh // 37 tackles, 2 sacks

Unlike their offensive counterpart, it's easy to pick out the studs on UCLA's defense. It's Holliday, Taua, Griffin and outside linebacker Keisean Lucier-South, although the latter hasn't had the production this season up to par with his talent. The rest of UCLA's defense, especially their secondary, should be ripe for the picking. They can cover but can they run with Miami's athletes?

The target will be defensive end Robert Johnson, the redshirt freshman on the left side that will get well accustomed to right tackle Tyree St. Louis. Miami will lean against Johnson all night and force UCLA to stay out of their nickel packages which should open things up for the passing attack.

MIA - 0 / 3 / 21 / 21 // 45

Miami defeats UCLA, rolls to first national title since 2001
NFL athletes all over the offense. The defense changes games.

Yes, Miami, this season's version of the Hurricanes could have been your dad's Hurricanes, too.

Or Howard Schnellenberger.

Miami's defense rattled UCLA's Josh Rosen all game and the offense put several nails in the coffin of the 45-10 victory Thursday that brought glory back to the program that Schellenberger and Jimmy Johnson built.

"We're back," said Jason White, the Heisman Trophy winner who threw for 216 yards and two scores.

Instead of Schellenberger or Johnson or Dennis Erickson, it's Mark Richt who walks the sidelines these days. Nobody's complaining. In the short span of four years, Richt took a program that had drifted far from what it had been and brought it back to championship caliber.

This was Miami's first title since 2001and its sixth Associated Press championship. The top-ranked Hurricanes (14-0) won the AP title unanimously.

Richt picked up the trophy Friday morning, and someday soon, he'll soon have practice fields and halls named after him.

"I feel good that I've been able to contribute something significant in this time," Richt said Friday. "I feel there's a tremendous responsibility and obligation to having a high standard of excellence. Because of that tradition, it makes me feel very good we've been able to contribute to that in a positive way."

Richt's defense, manned by defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who took the head coaching job at Florida, changed the tenor of the title game suddenly and startlingly when Derek Nolan jumped a screen pass to Soso Jamabo and returned the interception for a touchdown to make it 17-3.

"He got me a couple times on that play," said Nolan of Jamabo, who finished the game with a school record 15 receptions, "So I took a gamble and it paid off."

Nolan won the MVP of the game with two interceptions and eight tackles.

‣ Diaz officially accepts Florida head coaching job

With winning, comes hemorrhaging.

After being able to hold off suitors for defensive coordinator Manny Diaz last season by giving him a raise, Miami watched their energetic defensive coordinator accept the head coaching job at the University of Florida just days before the national championship.

Diaz still coached in the national championship game and his defense served him well, especially Diaz project and coach favorite safety Derek Nolan, who had a touchdown return and two interceptions. Nolan, perhaps the most quiet of all Miami players, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram thanking the young coach for believing in him.

Both offensive coordinator Matt Lubick and Diaz were considered for the head coaching job at Florida. Which brings us to...

‣ Syracuse hires offensive coordinator Matt Lubick to be their head coach.

Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick has agreed to become the head coach for the Syracuse Orangemen after a one-year pit stop in Miami.

Lubick, who the team did not expect to leave this off-season, helped true freshman Jason White win the Heisman in his first season as well as lead Miami to the highest scoring offense in school history.

‣ Nolan, Siegel mulling decisions.

Both defensive backs Derek Nolan and Evan Siegel -- both juniors -- are still weighing their options when it comes to declaring early for the draft.

Nolan blossomed in Diaz's 4-2-5 scheme this season and could decide to bolt following Diaz's departure while Siegel, a three-year starter, has very little left to prove at this level. Miami remains confident that it could bring back this pair of defensive back to help mentor a young defense that could have as many as nine new starters.

No early departures as Siegel, Nolan return for senior season
Miami was expecting defensive backs Derek Nolan and Evan Siegel to declare for the draft.

Christmas came a little bit late for the Hurricanes.

Both defensive backs announced on Instagram that they'd be returning for their senior season, helping Miami stop the bleeding as they have lost their two coordinators this season as well as 21 seniors, the majority of them major contributors to their championship season.
