Greatest Catches of All Time:

Mine would have to be this...

http://www.digitalutopia.org/images/edmonds.gif

Could only find a .gif because of the MLB rights thingy but this catch sends shivers down my spine every single time I watch it.

Without this catch by Jim Edmonds, the Cardinals do not reach the World Series in 2004.

So what are you favorite catches?

Re: Greatest Catches of All Time:

I remember that catch, and given the circumstances it was a magnificent catch.

However, when considering this criteria I would love to try and avoid looking at "historical moments" or "circumstantial scenarios" to determine my favorite catches. That said, that Edmonds catch, Dewayne Wise's catch, Willie Mays' catch, etc. would not be near the top of my list (Edmonds had a better catch as an Angel, circumstances notwithstanding).

As for just catches (at least in Giants history), in recent memory I'm going to have to go with this one:

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/m...&v=2&id=591998

This is obviously a topic that requires a lot of thought and backtracking, so I'll be back with more when I think of them. Dustan Mohr had a great catch for the Giants in 2003 or 2004 I believe, but I don't know if I can trace back that far in video archives to find it.

EDIT: And this catch by Gary Matthews Jr.

Re: Greatest Catches of All Time:

Yeah, there are so many catches that are incredible and also historically relevant, but I feel like that excludes so many that were in "run of the mill" situations.

The Edmonds catch against Kansas City HAS to be the greatest I've ever seen in my life.

Re: Greatest Catches of All Time:

Not the most SPECTACULAR catch but it could've been way more special as Devon White and the Jays made a triple play but the ump blew the call. Here's a pic of the actual catch.

Agree with the Edmonds catch in KC, The Matthews Jr. catch against Hou, and the Wise catch to preserve Mark Buerhle's perfect game.

I'll add the great bare-handed catch by Kevin Mitchell in St.Louis in 1989

That was great. I'll also throw David Wright's barehanded catch, though it's not of my favorites but it does come into the discussion of these rare kinds of plays:

Weird to think that was already five years ago.
