I read on these forums that player budget is based on the roster you load. The more talented the roster, the bigger the player budget is when you start. As for funds, there's really not a lot you can do with it past the 1st year. It just accumulates and really doesn't do anything.I hope they can change that next year.

BTW-you've played 4 years-did you see anything unusual the 4th offseason? I saw a lot of Type A FA go really cheap-2 million/yr, 3 million/yr-I want to know if I'm the only to see that.

My team is loaded right now, but I am $8 million in the hole. Will my budget get larger next year? Or am I screwed with signing guys next year? What happens?

Your budget will get larger if you have a record over .500. Free agency will allow you to have more money. You have to have some cap room before the end of the season. If you don't, you'll have to release players to cut salary before the end of the off-season.

Doh! That might be tough. Thanks.

Re: Another budget and money question

Your budget will only increase if you finish with a top 8 record or advance in the playoffs. If you finish .500 or better (even if you make the playoffs) your player budget will be unchanged.

Example: Win the NL West with an 83-79 record but the Brewers, Cubs and Braves all have 84 wins or more but fail to make the playoffs. If you lose in the NLDS, your budget will remain unchanged. Advance to the NLCS and it should be a 1% growth. Advance to the WS and it should be +3%, win the WS and it should be 5%.

Using the formula I posted in a couple other threads, I have successfully predicted the player budget changes of 29 of the 30 teams in four total offseasons in two different franchises. The wildcard is always the Pirates...they end up unchanged every year. Haven't discovered yet if it's just a fluke or if it's because they always have the lowest payroll.

Re: Another budget and money question

I am currently in the 2015 off season heading into 2016 and just had an interesting message from Boston Red Sox ownership (I'm running the Royals on 30 team control). Player budget in 2015 was $199M. They had the #2 record overall and went to the World Series. That should have gotten them a 6-7% increase, but an email indicates ownership is not willing to add any budget for player salaries. This is the first time I have seen such a message. The Red Sox franchise earned $160M in profit for the year.

Obvious questions: Is ~ $200M the cutoff for all franchises? Is that the limit forever, or will it change again next year? If the Red Sox finish sub-.500 next year will they earn a reprieve on a budget drop because this year's budget was not changed? My budget with the Royals is now $111M. Will I be able to grow the salary 2-9% a season until the $200M mark, or will ownership step in sooner for smaller market teams?

I was going to ask something else, but I answered my own question. The reason the Pirates' payroll never drops is because their player salaries have not hit the "salary floor" of $60M/year. Last year's payroll was only $50M. The Rays will reach the salary floor if they finish below .500 this year.

So it looks like player salaries max out at $200M with a soft minimum of $60M, but you can spend below that amount.
