It's not perfect, but it hides latency and in turn makes a lot of inputs more consistent. Big modern fighting games would use it, if it wasn't so resource extensive, but that is looking to change in the future.

Each player's inputs are sent to their copy of the game without having to wait for their opponent's to arrive over the network.
