Alternate and retro uniforms

Is there a set policy regarding when a team varies from it's true uniform?

I know Monday Night games see a lot of Retro.
Thanksving has retro.
But for instance, SD's Baby Blues?
Is that just for big games or nationally televised?

According the rules, teams are allowed to wear alternate unis twice per season, and have to inform the league in advance of when those games are. They are also actually discouraged from wearing them for national broadcasts, in order to not water down their traditional brand.

I figured the NFL would have rules. In my dynasty I wear my orange jerseys for the Steelers game and my Orange pants for the Ravens game other than that its my normal Browns gear.

in my old SD chise i wore the powder blues every game because i was just pretending that they officially switched back since they are probably the nicest looking jerseys in history. but in my phins chise, which i am currently playing, i wear orange jerseys at my home pats game and my home jets game, thats it.

I wear the Blacks for the Ravens with every big rivalry type game.

I haven't worn the Bucs alternates yet. Might have to bust those creamsickle bad boys out sometimes.

I plan to probably do the same thing in my franchise eventually. At present I wear the powder blue for the 4 home division match-ups.

The Browns have orange pants in Madden 12? I thought they only had white and brown pants in the game.

Orange pants? Where are these? My game only has white and brown alts. I want the orange pants too!
